PREFACI', GENERAL The District Census Handbook for each DistriGt containing all hasic ddails of popula tion for all villages and towns in the District along with other administrative statistics, was first brought out by Census Organisation in 1951 and w~s published by the State Government. The contents of the Hancbook was improved upon during 196J Census, and was found to he useful as a reference book for research schohrs, State and Central Government'>, L0cal Bodies and Private I nstitution:-.. During 1971 Censlls also, it was decided to i mprnvc the eOll tents of the Distpict eensm Handh00k furth~r <ll}(l continue this ust:fnl publicati011 by llle State Goverllll1cnt. As a consequence the Distric~ Census Handbook of 1971 Cen'>us is being published in three volumes viz., Part A-Village and Town Ditectory, Part B-Village and Townwisc Primary Censu~ Abstract 3.nd Part C-Analytical Report and Administrative Statements and District Census Tables. The present volume viz .• Part B, gives VnIage and Urban B]ockwisc Primary Census Abstract which 1s similar to the information contained in Village and Town Directory publifhed in 1961. PRESENTATION OF STATISTICS FOR REVENUE VlLLAGE/PANCHAYAT The Primary Census Abstract. a:> it is called, presents data for each village or &egmcnt of a village in the" Villagcwise Primary Census Abstract" ana for each "Enume ra1.0T Block" of a Town in the" Urban Blockwise Primary Census Ab"tract ". The data arc given by sex and industrial categories cf workers bcsidc~ non-workers. In the CCl.!{e of town~, tb~ tntal figures for each ward ~I,nd the t0wn tc'tal arc also given at t he end of the concerned Enume rator Block figures. In the 1961 Censu" Handbook. the data for rural areas were prcsentt:,d for t:ach Panchay",t while figures were presented for villages alone wherever these were not constituted. into a separate Panchayat. With a view to ens.ure comparability and. to enable data users to derive the. figures dtller for a Revenue village or Panchayat according to their requirements, the data are now prc ,:ented for segments of villages also wherever portions of one village happen to form part of two or more. Panchayats. FOJ! example. if portion" of a revenUe village bearing L.C.No. 12 forms part of two Panchayats, the figures are given separately for each por60n of the village against L. C. Nl). 12 alb and bib. The total figures for the entire revenue village may be obtained by adding the figures given against both the segments viz., 12 alb and 12 bib. lrinstead. the Panchayat figur.~s are required, the cro:;,s references for the other segment of the Panchayat, if any, printed ill the Appendix to the Vll1agewise Primary Census Abstract may he taken note of and the figure" ror concerned Location Code numbers added to arrive at the total figures for the respective Panchayats. CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRIAL CATEGORIES, 1961-'71 The Industrial categories of workt!rs for which the data are pre!)Clliell. in this Volume are CultiVators If Agricultural Labourers HI Livestock, Forestry. Fishing, HunLing &. Plantations, Orchard" and Allied activitic::-. (vi) IV Mining and Quarrying V Manufacturing, Processing, Servicing and Repair!'. (a) Household Industry (b) Other than Household IndustF-Y VI Constructic n VLl Trade and Commerce Vill Transport, Storage and Communit:atio.s anu IX Other Services. In this table, the departure f:forn 1961 Census Table is in respect of assigning a separate category to Mining and Qu~rryjng, i.e., category IV as against a combined category of Mining, Quarrying, Livestock, Forestry, Fishing, Hunting and Plantations, Orchards and Allied activities in 1961. The 1961 category IV-Household Industry is now included in category V-Manufac tuving, Processing, Servicing and Repairs-treating it as a sub-category [V (a)]. At the 1961 Census, "Household Industry" covered establishments falling under Divisions" 0 " and ., 1 " of the National Industrial Classification e.g. Cattle rearing, Orchard keeping, Plantations etc., apart from Divisions" 2" and" 3". At the 1971 Census ,Household Industry is confined to Divisions' 2' and' 3' only i.e., it covers Manufacturing, Processing, Servici.og or Repairing services only. MODE OF PRESENTATION The consolidated figures for the district and each taluk are given in the beginning for Total, Rural and Urban areas under the caption' District Primal.,- Census Abstract'. An alpha betical list of revenue villages is then given along with the Census Locat.ion Code Numbers of 1971 and 1961 to enable compruison. Then the ViUagewise Primary Census Abstra.ct is printed. In the appendix given at tre end of the Villagewlse Primary Census Abstract, the Pancl-ayats consisting of portic'ns or whole of 2 or more revenue village'> are furnished with nece.ss~ry cross referenc~s of LOC'ltioll Code Numbus, &0 a~ to enable. c(,llectioll ::If (.\'lta fOf Paacnayah. Tren follows the Urban Blockwise Primary Censuf> Abstract. In the appcnc1ix to the Urban Blockwise Primary Census Abstract, the detai1E- of the number of Hcuse Numbering Ward/Block ane the name and numbers of streets :.>s well as the door numbers which constitute each Emllnerator Block , are given. TI is arrangement is foHowed for each taluk and independent sub-taluk in the district. MAPS Apart fro111 the District Map given as frontispiece, map relating to each taluk showing details of Revenue Village numbers '3.10ng with their boundaries are also printed and appended at the appropriate places. As compared with the maps presented in 1961 District Census Hand book several improvements have been effected in the maps presented in this volume. The depic tion of revenue village boundaries in the maps is a notable change in 1971 Cens.us. All towns are shown in the District and Taluk maps with shading screens and also spheres according to the popUlation size of towns. AREA FIGURES In the District Primary Census Abstract, the area figures are given in Square Kilometres for Total, Rural and Urban areas. In the Villagewise Primary Cenius Abstraot, the area figures (vii) for each Location Code Unit are given in Hectares. The area figure for each town is also given at the end of the Urban Blockwise Primary Census Abstract in Square Kilometres. In the District Primary Census Abstract" the area figures of the District Total represent the "Geographical Area" figures supplied by the Surveyor-General. Figures for Urban areas are those supplied by the Local Bodies. The Urban area of a district has been arrived by adding the urban area figures of each taluk within the district.
