Publication of Data with GIS Services Jason Carr Michael Vetter www.dotd.la.gov What are GIS Services? The definition is a standard protocol for serving over the internet, a georeferenced map which a web server generates from data in a GIS database WHAT??? Background on GIS Services Easily share data Consume within ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, or other applications Don’t have to download data – But you can, maybe, only if we allow you too… Types of GIS Services DOTD produces 2 main types of services: – Map service – Feature service Other Services – LRS service – Geo-Processing service – Cached service Map Service Make maps, features, and attribute data available to the web Very basic GIS service Can’t edit or change symbology within ArcMap Feature Service Makes feature data and nonspatial table available More capabilities than Map Services Depending on the service settings, users can: – Edit attributes & shapes – Change symbology & query w/in ArcMap or a web application – Perform Analysis Underlying Data THE DATABASE DOTD has two SQL Server databases for publishing data – RHWORK_Replica and – Publish RHWORK_Replica is a read only copy or version of DOTDs Road & Highways Production database Publish is a read only repository of other GIS data that DOTD maintains OR shares with other agencies Underlying Data THE DATABASE The Enterprise GIS of DOTD has many databases – These databases feed into the Publish and RHWORK_Replica databases to be published via web and feature services through ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, and other applications that can consume web services What Data? Currently DOTD has published web services for approximately 30 data elements – These are mostly R&H event layers and the State Route network (Highway Inventory data) – An event layer is an attribute of a route network such as pavement type or number of lanes Some of GIS data layers such as Louisiana Parish boundaries, DOTD Districts and State Police Troops are also published Who can Publish? Each DOTD business unit can and should designate someone to publish data – Section 21 GIS Unit would like to work with you on how to accomplish publishing data; Some questions to be answered might be… • How is your data stored? – Existing business system such as dTIMS or Agile Assets – Excel Spreadsheet, CSV, MS Access database • How do you reference your data? Control Section/Log Mile, Lat/Long, Intersection Offset, Engineering Stations Who can Publish? Continued • Should your data reside in an Enterprise database? – Roads & Highways – Other SQL Server or Oracle database • What kind of access do people need to your data? – Public or Internal to your Business Unit • Who will maintain your data and how often does the data get updated? To publish data through ArcGIS Server, you need Publisher (Role assigned in ArcGIS Server) privileges – Section 21 GIS Unit manages these permissions What does published data look like? Depending on what type of service you publish for your data, as the data owner, you can restrict access or ability to modify symbols and attributes of your data as you desire or you can allow the consumers to have the ability to change symbols, hide columns, query subsets of the data Where do I find published services? https://giswebnew.dotd.la.gov/arcgis/rest/services – External location exposed to the Internet http://giswebnew/dotd/rest/services – Internal location (need a DOTD domain login to access) Via ArcGIS Desktop Via ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS Other applications that support ESRIs Web API EXAMPLES – YES FINALLY Connect to DOTD Services in ArcMap DOTD Services in ArcMap SERVICE LOCATIONS https://giswebnew.dotd.la.gov/arcgis/rest/services – External location exposed to the Internet http://giswebnew/dotd/rest/services – Internal location (need a DOTD domain login to access) Jason Carr – [email protected] Michael Vetter – [email protected] QUESTIONS???.
