Convolvulaceae (Morning Glory family) Dodder is a parasitic plant that has so little chlorophyll that it is completely dependent on a host plant for survival. The stem of the young seedling gropes in the air until it makes contact with a plant; it must attach to a suitable host within a few days of germinating or it will die. The parasite coils about the stem of the host, then makes root-like branches that penetrate the stem. The basal part of the parasite disappears, leaving no direct connection to the soil. Other names of this parasite include witch’s hair, love vine, strangleweed, devil's- guts, goldthread, pull-down, devil's-ringlet, hellbine, hairweed, devil's-hair, and hailweed. .
