Census throws up benchmark data on the state of abundant human resources available in our country, their demography, culture and economic structure at a given point of time. Any census is incomplete unless the data collected from the field is processed and fully disseminated within a reasonable time and in a user- friendly manner. Since the processing of the massive census data requires considerable time, it is customary to release provisional popl!.lation totals for the immediate consumption of the data users who are mostly State and Central Governments, planners, researchers, etc. Accordingly, two sets of provisional data, viz.; the sex-wise total population, child population in the age group 0-6, literacy by sex, density of population, growth rate, etc., at State/district level in Paper 1 of 2001 and sex-wise rural-urban distribution of population, child population in the age group 0-6, literacy, etc., at district/town/census town level in Paper 2 of 2001, were brought out in March and July 2001 respectively. It is once again my privilege to present this paper captioned 'Provisional Population Totals - Paper 3 of 2001: Distribution of Workers and Non-Workers' in respect ofNCT of Delhi at state, district, tehsil and town level. The data presented in this paper, although provisional, is expected to be useful to a large section of people, government departments and other data users for making in-depth studies of the economic characteristics of the population as per their specific requirements. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Shri J.K. Banthia, Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India who has been a perennial source of inspiration, encouragement and sound advice throughout the Census Operations and thereafter.
