You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. If you do afflict them, and they G cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry; and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor, and you shall not exact interest from him. If ever you take your neighbor's garment in pledge, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down; for that is his only covering, it is his mantle for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate." Lector The Word of the Lord. William Beale (1784-1854) BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, * and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; * and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side, * that will bring forth his fruit in due season. 4 His leaf also shall not wither; * and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper. 5 As for the ungodly, it is not so with them; * but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth. 4 6 Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgment, * neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 7 But the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous; * and the way of the ungodly shall perish. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen. The Second Lesson………………………………………………... I Thessalonians 2:1-8 Lector A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. ou yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain; but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in Y our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile; but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never used either words of flattery, as you know, or a cloak for greed, as God is witness; nor did we seek glory from men, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse taking care of her children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us. Lector The Word of the Lord. Matthew 22:34-46 Lector The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. hen the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. "Teacher, which is the W great commandment in the law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put 5 thy enemies under thy feet' ? If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?" And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions. The Gospel of the Lord. Father Burgess the people standing The Nicene Creed: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
