Each year the Summer Games features 6,000 athletes competing in 27 sports. Athletes of all ages and abilities represent over 300 Massachusetts communities as well as Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New York each year. The Summer Games take place annually during the month of July consisting of showcase sports, individual sports, and team sports. Tryouts for showcase sports are held during the month of June statewide. Finals for all Summer Games competitions are held in the Metro Boston and Central Massachusetts areas. The Bay State Games are a program of an organization called The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation (MASF). MASF is a 501© (3), non-profit organization that was established to host the first sanctioned State Games of Massachusetts. Today, the MASF operates with the mission of promoting personal development, education, physical fitness, teamwork, and good sportsmanship through athletic competitions and educational programs for the people of Massachusetts. The Bay State Games was founded by Dave McGillivray in 1982. McGillivray was on the Governor’s Council of Physical Fitness and Sports. He wanted to create a state-wide summer sports festival for Massachusetts. McGillivray appointed Doug Arnot to pitch the idea of “Sportsfest” to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to become the executive director. “Sportsfest” started off with only four sports with 500 athletes. The games were conducted on hardwood floors and playing fields at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Summer Games’ breakthrough year came in 1985 when basketball became the showcase event in both women’s and men’s divisions. The same year, Arnot developed the idea of creating a winter sports festival for Massachusetts athletes. The Winter Games took place in the Northern Berkshire region because of the available facilities. Four hundred athletes took part in the inaugural Winter Games with competitions including figure skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, and speed skating. Within the first couple of year of the Winter Games, there was much experimentation. Figure staking and alpine skiing are the only two sports which have been included in every Winter Games. Current sports in the Winter Games include figure skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoe racing, curling, masters ice hockey, and bowling. Today, the Bay State Games produces quality Olympic-style competitions in summer and winter sports. The Bay State Games is a member of the National Congress of State Games which consists of over 30 member states. The National Congress of State Games is a member of the United States Olympic Committee’s Multi-Sport Organization Counsel. Athletes in selected sports who win medals at the Bay State Summer and Winter Games are invited to compete at the State Games of America held bi-annually at a selected location within the country. The State Games of America has been held in St. Louis, MO; Hartford, CT; Colorado Springs, CO; San Diego, CA; Hershey, PA; and Lincoln, NE. The Games will be held in Lynchburg, VA in 2019. Figure Skating has been one of the largest sports in the State Games of America since its inception. Massachusetts has lead the way in State Games of America Figure Skating participation often having the most competitors of any state in the event.
