Director: Jason Kuchar, Edmonton, Alberta Jason Kuchar is a musician and film producer from Edmonton, currently performing with several bands (Electric Audrey 2, Night Howl, Whyte Ave Womprats). Despite having no educa- tion or training in film studies, his ludicrous short films have won several awards and have been screened in numerous film festivals across North America. The Preparator Take a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the role of an art museum preparator from arrival of artwork all the way through to final display. This short mini-doc features Contemporary Art Gallery, Esker Foundation’s Head Preparator, Doug Haslam, and the work of artists Jeffrey Gibson and Nep Sidhu. Director: Aquiles Ascencion, Calgary, Alberta Aquiles Ascencion is a Calgary-based producer and director originally from Venezuela. Ascencion graduated from the Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, Geneva, Switzer- land in 2003, with further studies in Writing for Film and Television, graduating in 2013 from the Vancouver Film School. Ascencion has a background in acting, collaborating with renowned directors in Europe, at the time, including Claude Stratz, André Steiger and acted in Alain Tanner’s feature film “Paul s’en va”; (2004). Quarantinis While three ladies video chat, they discover the power of a quarantine + martinis. Director: Girl Brain, Edmonton, Alberta Everything in our ‘Girl Brain @ Home Sketch Series’ was filmed with maximum social distancing. Like, no one was ever in the same house, or even neighborhood. Not even the production crew - a weird dude named Frederick - who used video chat software and did everything remotely. Illusion: The Fear Thinking that she has been freed from the grip of her pimp, a young sex worker named Dice who works in the street is surprised by her assailant, who reminds her that she is his property and she belongs to him. Director: Valécia Pépin, Edmonton, Alberta I have been living in Alberta since the fall 2014 and since then all I have been doing is chasing my dreams. Illusion was born in Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in September 2017 as part of Entr’art , an opportunity offered by the Regroupement Artistique Francophone de l’Alberta (RAFA). Then, Illusion was read at l’UniThéâtre, in January 2018, as part of À Voix Haute. My second version was pre- sented in 2019, as part of Coup d’oeil. Today, my goal is to bring Illusion to another level. I am also a radio host and music manager for Radio Cité 97,9 FM! 6 Edmonton Short Film Festival 2020 One Bad Day An eager detective interrogates an evasive suspect, but it’s clear that they both have secrets. Director: Max Montesi, Devon, Alberta Max Montesi is an actor and cinematographer, known for “The Magicians”, “Sacred Lies”, “The 100”. Perspective It is one thing to break away from societal expectations but it’s another thing to know if you want to. Where is the line between what you believe and what you have been programmed to believe since childhood? Through dramatic movement and music, this project explores the struggle to recognize your voice and show your own co- lours in order to make authentic connections while being continually drowned by outside rules and propaganda. Director: Delanie Tiedemann, Tofield, Alberta Delanie is a graduate from the Motion Picture Arts program at Red Deer College and has worked as a pro- ducer, set designer, and as an actor in short films in Edmonton, Alberta. She is passionate about nurturing human connection and communication through art and storytelling. Her training in film, theatre, and educa- tion gives her practical knowledge for the artistic vision of the piece and the guidance needed for directing. Black Acid Teenager tries acid for the first time while he should be babysitting his brother and sister. Director: Ben Metcalf, Okotoks, Alberta Ben Metcalf is an amateur film maker and music pro- ducer. Ben has been making electronic music for over 20 years but has only recently started making films. In fact Ben’s first and currently only finished film is a music video he made recently. It seemed a good idea at the time to make a music video for one of his owntracks, little did he know how hard it would be and how much he would love the challenge. Ghosted The day in the life of a Medium with an extraordinary, yet burdensom gift: the ability to take over people’s hauntings. Director: Taya Walter, Calgary, Alberta Taya Walter is an emerging independent filmmaker from Calgary, Alberta who graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies in 2015. She has worked in the directing depart- ment on various short film projects in her city, including assistant directing “Chasing Tears”, “Just Ask”, and “Lucid Dream” (music video for Calgary- based artist Hello Moth). She has directed the web series “High Strung”, which earned her an award of merit from the Southern Shorts Awards out of Roswell, Georgia, the short film “Ghosted”, as well as her feature film debut “From Hell, With Love”, which she also wrote, produced, and acted in. Edmonton Short Film Festival 2020 7 We Are Crush A group of four women band together to make rock climbing more accessible in Banff, Alberta. Every run is a puzzle waiting to be solved, and if the Crush Collec- tive has anything to do with it, gender norms will not be part of the equation. Director: Julia Gunst, Calgary, Alberta Julia Gunst grew up in Calgary, Alberta and explored her love for film in Montreal where she studied Communications. She has created short documentary projects for various arts organizations and recently completed a Video Production practicum at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity. Melted Hearts A snowman who is tired of being on his own decides to “make” a friend in this CG animation which pays homage to classic stop motion films. Director: Cole Stevenson, Sherwood Park, Alberta Cole Stevenson is a 21-year-old actor, writer, director, and animator. Origi- nally from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Cole is currently studying Computer Sci- ence at the University of Alberta with plans to pursue animation as a career. Absence Absence is a short film following 13-year-old Kasey, her older brother, Ma- son, and her mother, Lauren, in the wake of her father’s mysterious disap- pearance. The family struggles to cope, while Kasey begins to believe that her father – a man deeply interested in UFO sightings and close encounters – may have been abducted by aliens. Director: Sarah Clarke, Edmonton, Alberta Sarah Clarke is a writer and director from Edmonton, Alberta. She gradu- ated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of British Columbia in 2019, where she completed her first short films “Eggshells” and “Ab- sence”.
