Social Bookmarking with Del.icio.us—The Basics! Create a Del.icio.us Account o Go to http://delicious.com/ o Click “Join Now” in the upper right corner and fill in the required information. You can use a Yahoo account if you have one or will need to create a Yahoo account to use Delicious. Add Buttons to Internet Explorer o Login to your Delicious account at www.delicious.com o Click on Help. (Upper right) o Click link under "Need Tools?" (bookmarking buttons and add-ons) o Under Browser Buttons for Saving Bookmarks, click Bookmarklet buttons for any browser o Scroll down to "Internet Explorer--Easy" o Click on the "here" link. If you don't see your buttons after you install them, go to your toolbar and click View > Toolbars and make sure "Links" is checked on the list that comes up. You can then drag the Links toolbar to a more convenient area. (You may have to unlock your toolbars first.) Add Buttons to Firefox or Safari o Login to your Delicious account at www.delicious.com o Click on Help. (Upper right) o Click link under "Need Tools?" (bookmarking buttons and add-ons) o Under Browser Buttons for Saving Bookmarks, click Bookmarklet buttons for any browser o Scroll down to your preferred browser and follow the directions given. (In other words, o Go to the web site you want to tag. bookmark a favorite site.) o Click on the “Tag” button on your toolbar. (The button might say “Post to Delicious” or some other variation instead of “tag.” o A form will pop up. (See illustration below.) o Edit the title of the web site if needed to make it more descriptive. o Add notes (not required) to described the site for future reference. o Important! Add tags (keywords) that describe the site. Tags must be one word with no spaces, so use socialstudies or social.studies, for example. Assign as many tags as applicable so you can find the site again. You will see “Recommended” tags below your form as well as a list of your existing tags. You can click on any of these to add tags for the new site. These tags will create links to the site. o Click “Save.” Have your students use your o Give students the URL to your Delicious account. (For example, Barb Wit’s Delicious tags URL is http://delicious.com/barbwit56. Substitute your own Delicious username for barbwit56.) o Consider linking your Delicious account to your Edline pages or your class web site for easy access from any computer. o Tell students which of your tags to click on to get the web sites you’ve saved for them.
