MEASUREMENT REPORT PELLA HALF MARATHON 21.097,5 m 2 0 1 2 IAAF GRE / 2012 / 048 / JFD0591 Elevation change : +0.9 m / km Separation : 5,21 % Georgios DOUSSIS Measurer B Introduction The Pella Municipality with the technical assistance of the “O.M.G.” (Giannitsa Marathon Running Club) is the Event Organizer of the “Pella Half-Marathon”. The 1st edition of the Half-Marathon will be held on Sunday 16th, September 2012. The race course measurement was requested by “O.M.G.” (Giannitsa Marathon Running Club) and particularly by its President Babis SEMERTZIDIS. Then it was approved by the International Measurement Administrator, Jean-Francois DELASALLE. Indeed, the measurement of the half marathon course, 2012 edition, took place on 28th July 2012. This mission was accomplished according to current IAAF and A.I.M.S. regulations and was held under sunny, hot weather. The measurement was implemented by me, Georgios DOUSSIS, Measurer IAAF/AIMS, Grade B. For this activity I had the support and effective cooperation of B. SEMERTZIDIS (OMG), S. SOTIRIADIS and V. THOMAIDIS (Pella-Giannitsa Municipality, who had a perfect knowledge of the entire course. The race course has the approval of Pella-Giannitsa Municipality well as the Traffic Police. The start is few meters away from the entrance of the “Platanokampos” Sport Center, approx. one kilometer away from the Giannitsa city center, at Konstantinoupoleos str. (see photos). The arrival is at city center of Giannitsa, at Eleftheriou Venizelou str., in front of the Military Club building. The race course is a course type “loop”, but incomplete, mostly undulating. The altitude difference (drop) between the altitude of the departure (29 m) and that of arrival (50 m) is 21 m, which means an elevation gain of +0.9 m/km. The proposed circuit does meet the IAAF requirements for a drop of < 1m/km (Rule 260, 28c). The start and the finish points of this race course, measured along a straight line between them, show a total distance (separation) of 1100 m – a separation ratio of 5,21%, compared to the total distance of the Half-Marathon. The proposed circuit does meet the IAAF requirements for separation of < 50% of the overall distance (Rule 260, 28b). The race course, “Pella Half-Marathon”, 2012 edition, is approved by the Administrator under the International Performance Measurement No. GRE / 2012/ 048 /JFD0591 dated September 16, 2012. Without modification, the validity of this measurement is 5 years. I would like to thank the President of the “O.M.G.” (Giannitsa Marathon Running Club) B. SEMERTZIDIS for his support, availability and excellent organization of my stay. Georgios DOUSSIS Measurer IAAF/AIMS, Grade B Contact Pella Municipality Hatzidimitriou & Ethn. Semertzidis, President of the “O.M.G.” (Giannitsa Marathon Running Club) which provides the technical support for the event, implemented the measurement of the “Pella Half Marathon” race course, according to IAAF/AIMS rules, using a bicycle given from the race organizing committee with a 5-digit Jones Counter on it. The race will be held on September, 16th 2012. It is at its 1st edition. In the previous years the race went over several distances from 10 to 16 kilometers and it has never been officially measured under the IAAF/AIMS requirements in the past. During the course measurement the weather was hot, it was a sunny summer day. The race course is a way mostly through the fields and places around the city of Giannitsa, from the sport center named “Platanotopos” around one kilometer away from the city center as start point to the city center as finish point. A traffic warranty is given to organizers by the local Traffic Police for the race day that the athletes should run on roads completely free of traffic for both directions of the entire marathon course. Course restrictions and limitations are shown at the photos below. The race course is a type “loop” course, but incomplete. The finish point is located 1100 meters away from the start point. After the start shot the runners should run uphill for the first kilometer and then through the city center. Then they leave downhill the city center and run through the fields of Giannitsa. Until the half way the course includes uphill, flat and downhill parts with mostly smooth inclination. After the halfway the runners go along the river Loudias and meet two flat parts of dirt roads for approx. 200m length each. These two course parts have acceptable surface for running. The last five kilometers of the course are lightly uphill. A traffic warranty is given to organizers by the local Traffic Police for the race day for the entire race course, so the runners should run on roads and streets free of vehicle traffic. The measurement was done by my self following the shortest possible way according to the measurement rules. For almost the half of the distance I should ride against the daily traffic. That was possible and without problems thank to the excellent organization from Mr. Babis Semertzidis and the perfect realization of both Traffic Police and Municipality Police. The running surface of the regional roads at city center and outside Giannitsa is mostly asphalt of good quality. Some course parts especially after the halfway are of passable asphalt quality. The two above mentioned course parts of approx. 200m length each are dirt roads. A 50m-steel tape was used for the calibration which was made at the straight and flat way at km 17 of the race course (see map and photos). After the calibration, I undertook a measurement at the proposed course and a post calibration. After the calculations the entire course was found 74.27m longer than it should be. According to the organizers’ wish I removed the start point 74.27m to the front and I undertook a second measurement according to my records and the correction for the adjustment of every single of the 21 kilometer points. The length of the entire course was found at the end of this final ride 21.101,20 m (3,70m longer than it should be) possibly because of the increasing temperature. Every km point is marked with a nail and ring on the running surface (see photos). The drop is (+0,9m/km) and the separation 5,21%. The race course does meet the IAAF/AIMS requirements. This measurement will be valid for 5 (five) years (2012-2016). Any modification on the measured course needs a re-measurement. Final adjustments to the race course and Conclusion We removed the start point 74.27m to the front by setting a new start point as final and permanent one. I undertook a final ride over the entire course by following exactly the same way. All intermediate km-points including start and finish points are marked with nails and rings on the asphalt surface. The position of each one point is described in details in the following pages (see photos). The length of the entire course was found at the end of this final ride 21.101,20 m (3,70m longer than it had to be) possibly because of the increasing temperature during the final ride. The list of streets and pathways, maps included, is given in the following pages showing the limitations for the markup of the course.
