Three different builders built the Class NGG 16 locomotives in five batches. No. 85 to 88 were built in 1937 by John Cockerill. No. 109 to 116 in 1939, No. 125 to 131 in 1951 and No. 137 to 143 in 1958 all by Beyer, Peacock and Co. The last batch, No. 149 to 156 were built by Hunslet-Taylor in 1967/68. No. 156 has the distinction of been the last steam locomotive built for the SAR. Locomotives known to have been first placed in service on the Ixopo branch are No. 85, 112, 115, 116, 129, 130 and 131. In the November 1965 Natal System locomotive returns, the following locomotives were in service on the Ixopo branch, No. 85, 86, 112, 113, 114, 115, 126, 129, 131, 139, 140 and 143. Following the arrival of the Class 91 diesels in 1973 on the Avontuur line, the Class NGG 16’s there were transferred to Natal, also the eight locomotives of the last batch were placed in service on the Ixopo and Harding Branches. At the time of closure in 1986, locomotives No. 86, 112, 137, 150 and 152 were on shed at Umzinto and No. 87, 109, 113 and 153 were on shed at Ixopo.
