<p><strong>CHAPTER </strong></p><p><strong>INTRODUCTION </strong></p><p><strong>I</strong></p><p><em>(</em></p><p><strong>\</strong></p><p><strong>India is </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>land of Immense variety, not only in its </strong></p><p><strong>physical features, climate and natural resources, but </strong></p><p><strong>also, and perhaps more so, in its people, languages and </strong></p><p><strong>culture. People at various stages of civilization from </strong></p><p><strong>the very primitive to the highly advanced, and of various </strong></p><p><strong>racial ancestries from the Negrito to the Nordic are </strong></p><p><strong>found in this vast sub-continent. Successive advents of </strong></p><p><strong>peoples of highly varied cultural and racial types into </strong></p><p><strong>the land for thousands of years, have forced the original </strong></p><p><strong>inhabitants, and possibly some of the subsequent settlers, </strong></p><p><strong>into the relative security and freedom of the forests </strong></p><p><strong>and hinterland of the country. These peoples who are </strong></p><p><strong>found all the way from north to south, and east to west, </strong></p><p><strong>form the tribal population of India, No exact estimate </strong></p><p><strong>of their numbers has ever been made, nor will it be possible, </strong></p><p>'i </p><p><em>L</em></p><p><strong>due to </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>variety of reasons. Census figures of </strong><sup style="top: -0.8125em;">&lt;</sup><strong>tribes vary greatly from one Census to another, not so much due </strong></p><p><strong>to natural demographic variations as to changing definitions </strong></p><p><strong>and criteria in classifying peoples. The comparatively </strong></p><p><strong>recent classification of </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>section of people as </strong></p><p><strong>»Scheduled </strong></p><p><strong>Tribes* is a political, rather than strictly ethnographic, </strong></p><p><strong>2</strong></p><p><strong>classification. Equally misleading is the classification </strong></p><p><strong>of people according to Religion, as for instance, Hindus </strong></p><p><strong>and Animists, or Hindus and Tribals. Kingsley Davies </strong></p><p><strong>says: "Most inaccurate figures on religion in India are </strong></p><p><strong>those covering the </strong></p><p><strong>’Tribals* (or </strong></p><p><strong>’</strong></p><p><strong>Animists* as they were </strong></p><p><strong>1</strong></p><p><strong>called prior to the 1931 Census).** </strong></p><p><strong>There is considerable dove-tailing between the lower </strong></p><p><strong>forms of Hinduism and the higher forms of tribal religion; </strong></p><p><strong>so that, it is impossible to draw </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>line of demardation. </strong></p><p><strong>In point of fact, there is hardly any form of tribal </strong></p><p><strong>religion in India in which all deities of the Hindu pantheon </strong></p><p><strong>are totally absent. If we adopt </strong></p><p><strong>classifying peoples by religion, any person in India who </strong></p><p><strong>is not Muslim, Christian, or the follower of some </strong></p><p><strong>other religion that is quite distinct from Hinduism, is </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>crude criterion in </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>Hiririu. </strong></p><p><strong>In order to give </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>rough indication of the tribal </strong></p><p><strong>population of India we may once again refer to Kingsley </strong></p><p><strong>Davies. </strong></p><p><strong>1. He writes: </strong></p><p><strong>__ </strong></p><p><strong>The existence of </strong></p><p><strong>a</strong></p><p><strong>Negrito strain in the </strong></p><p><strong>aboriginal population of South India has </strong></p><p><strong>;</strong></p><p><strong>received additional evidence in Travancore. </strong></p><p><strong>It has been observed by Lapicque and Hr.Guha among the Kadars and the Pulayans of the Cochin State, and by Or.Hutton and myself among the </strong></p><p><strong>Uralis and the Kanikkar </strong></p><p><strong>.</strong></p><p><strong>Spirally curved hair has been observed by me among the Oralis, the </strong></p><p><strong>Kanikkar, the Malavetans, the Malapantararas, and </strong></p><p><strong>the Vishavans.&nbsp;They are followed by the Proto- </strong></p><p><strong>Australoid (Pre-Bravldian). This type is found </strong></p><p><strong>among the aboriginal tribes of Central and Southern </strong></p><p><strong>1. The Malavetans, the </strong></p><p><strong>Muthuvans, the Kanikkar. and others may be </strong></p><p><strong>regarded as representatives of this group. </strong></p><p><strong>'</strong></p><p><strong>At present there are no distinctly Negrito </strong></p><p><strong>communities in India, nor has any trace ofa </strong></p><p><strong>Negrito language been discovered. But distinctly </strong></p><p><strong>Negrito features not only crop up continually </strong></p><p><strong>from the Himalayan slopes to Cape Comorin, but </strong></p><p><strong>also abound in great megaiithie monuments which </strong></p><p><strong>help us to some extent to unravel the history of </strong></p><p><strong>their remote past. The observations of Dr.Hutton, </strong></p><p><strong>Or.Guha and myself go to show that Negrito </strong></p><p><strong>features crop up among the Kadars and the Fulayans </strong></p><p><strong>of the Cochin State, and the Brails, the </strong></p><p><strong>Malapantarams, the Kanikkars and the Bishavans </strong></p><p><strong>of Travancore. </strong></p><p><strong>It is interesting to point out that megalithic </strong></p><p><strong>monuments are largely found on the High Ranges </strong></p><p><strong>of Travancore. Dolmens </strong></p><p><strong>,</strong></p><p><strong>menhirs and alignments </strong></p><p><strong>are found in the region of the Bralis, the </strong></p><p><strong>Mannans, the Malayarayans </strong></p><p><strong>,</strong></p><p><strong>and other Jungle </strong></p><p><strong>,</strong></p><p><strong>tribes of Travancore. Mr.Perry points out that, </strong></p><p><strong>all the world over, megalithic monuments exhibit </strong></p><p><strong>such similarities of structure that they must </strong></p><p><strong>have been the work of </strong></p>
