Student Rep Report – Read by Laura Turci-Delgado Good evening Interim Superintendent Truppo, Board President Schratz, District Administration, Board Members, and Community Members, Our school is busy with activities and virtual instruction as we start the last marking period of the school year. Seniors are making preparations to safely engage in end-of-the-year activities to make lasting memories with our friends and teachers. As the seniors prepare to enjoy the fruits of all their hard work, our school has had plenty of activities for all to take part in. This past April 23rd our NOH8 Club encouraged students and teachers to participate in a Day of Silence during period 1. This was a part of the GLSEN's (The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) Day of Silence- a national student-led movement highlighting the silencing and Regular Public Meeting Minutes May 10, 2021 Page 1 of 131 erasure of LGBTQ people. Over 4 in 5 LGBTQ students don’t see positive LGBTQ representation in their curriculum, nearly 9 in 10 experience verbal harassment, and almost a third of the students miss school because they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Students at Passaic High School participated in this event to ensure every student at Passaic High School knows that they are loved and we are here to support them. We continue to make sure our school is a safe space for everyone through Project Bullyside, a virtual Anti-Bullying workshop. On April 29th, students and families took part in this event which featured poetry, fun interactive games/activities, mirror reflections and activity bags. Students also had the opportunity to collaborate with the Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. This organization works with students that are interested in a career in Engineering and/or STEM. Students have the opportunity to shadow a professional in the field of Engineering and STEM. The Spring Shadow program, created by Rutgers engineering students, will be broken down in two days to provide virtual workshops to prep and expose the students to the wonderful opportunities within engineering! This program focuses on providing resources to help the students grow academically and professionally given by not only our chapter, but fellow engineering geared-organizations and companies. So many of our students were celebrated for their outstanding accomplishments in and out of the classroom by the Passaic Optimist
