The Western Michigan volleyball team has rattled off four-straight 20- win seasons, capped off by 2008’s 28-win season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 against No. 1 Penn State after victories over host Dayton and No. 16 seed Tulane. The Broncos finished the year No. 25 in the final NCAA Ratings Percentage Index and No. 26 in the Bison/AVCA Coaches Poll. The Broncos are the most storied team in the MAC with more NCAA Tournament appearances (10) and conference championships (9) than any other team in the league. Over the last four seasons, the Broncos have compiled an overall record of 90- 43 and 45-19 in the MAC. ... WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY VOLLEYBALL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PHILOSOPHY The Western Michigan University Volleyball Strength and Conditioning Program is a year round effort to maintain a championship level of strength, power, speed and conditioning. The program is built to help each athlete play at their optimal level during practice and games, stay healthy and improve performance by incorporating explosiveness and intensity in each workout. Using a combination of Olympic exercises, functional training and volleyball-specific speed and agility training, each Bronco Volleyball athlete will be physically ready to make that championship run. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC TRAINING The focus of the WMU athletic training staff is to prevent student- athlete injuries and facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation to ensure a safe return to competition. Five full-time athletic trainers oversee three graduate athletic trainers in providing comprehensive medical care to all of Western Michigan’s 16 varsity sports. In addtion to its eight-person athletic training staff, the WMU athletic training staff is assisted by three full-time physicians and a sports medicine fellow. ... Western win this game! Being a member of the Western Michigan volleyball team features a unique experience both at home and on the road. At home, the Broncos consistently are among the top two teams in attendance in the Mid-American Conference, including some of the top student support across the league. The Broncos also get multiple opportunities to interact with their fans with autograph sessions, photo opportunities and public post-game interviews during Bronco Replay. Western Michigan also travels around the country and the world after spending 10 days in Brazil during the summer of 2008. The Broncos played multiple Brazilian club teams, while visiting Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Isla Belha. The Broncos also hosted a Chinese club team during the 2008 season. Over the last four seasons, the Broncos have played games in Hawai’i, California, Florida and North Carolina, with a second trip to Hawai’i scheduled for 2009. The Broncos don’t duck any opponent with multiple matchups against nationally-ranked and NCAA Tournament- caliber teams. ... AN EXPERIENCE WMUWMU VVOLLEYBALLOLLEYBALL ISIS ...... Western Michigan volleyball student-athletes utilize the Ellis Athletic Academic Advising Center to work towards their degrees before, during and after each season. Munson’s attention to detail in all areas of the student- athletes’ experience has helped the program’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) score, resulting in recognition from the NCAA during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as being ranked in the top-10 percent of all Division I volleyball programs in graduating student-athletes. The court is not the only arena Western Michigan volleyball has shown rising success during head coach Colleen Munson’s tenure. The Broncos are getting it done in the classroom as well. Over the past four years WMU volleyball student-athletes have posted a 3.0 GPA or higher in every semester, while earning the AVCA Team Academic Award in 2005 and 2008 for finishing the year with a 3.30+ GPA, including a 3.54 team GPA in 2008. Over the last four seasons, Munson has coached five different players to seven Academic All-MAC spots, while Katie Eberling (left) has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV Volleyball Team in 2007 (third team) and 2008 (first team) and Ashley Vogl (above) was the 2009 MAC nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year. ... In its 53 years of existence, the Mike Gary Athletic Fund has been the official fundraising arm of the WMU Athletic Department, raising over $4 million through annual gifts and major contributions. The Gary Fund has raised more than $1 million in each of the last two seasons. SUPPORTED WMUWMU VVOLLEYBALLOLLEYBALL ISIS...... The Western Michigan Volleyball program hosted its first Volleyball Cares match on Oct. 18, 2008, against Buffalo at University Arena to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The Broncos wore pink, along with most of the coaching staff, game staff, ushers and fans. The joint effort between WMU volleyball and the American Cancer Society included a trio of online auctions (two of which were for the signed jerseys pictured). Between the auctions and other fundraising efforts, the Broncos raised more than $3,800. Throughout the season, the Broncos visited Bronson Children’s Hospital in Kalamazoo and then collected toys during the Holiday Inn West Bronco Thanksgiving Classic that the players later distributed to children at the hospital during the holidays, as one of just many volunteer efforts that the players are involved in both in and out of season. ...
