Contents of Brooklyn Historical Society's Journals of Long Island History Introduction From 1939-1942, 1961-1969, and 1973-1982, the Brooklyn Historical Society (known then as the Long Island Historical Society) published a periodic journal, called the Long Island Historical Society Quarterly in 1939-42 and, in the later years, The Journal of Long Island History . The journals include articles on historical topics concerning Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Many of the articles, especially in the 1939- 1942 volumes, include full or partial transcriptions of account books, correspondence, deeds, tombstone inscriptions, and other manuscripts from the BHS collection and elsewhere. Following is an inventory of the journals' contents, compiled by BHS library staff in 2010. The content descriptions are generally as found in the tables of contents, though entries for BHS publication lists, contributor biographies, and other such front and back matter were not recorded in this inventory. Indexes for the 1939-1941 quarterlies are found in issue number 4 of each year. In 1961, the new journal began again with Volume 1; an index for these volumes 1- 14 are found in Volume 15 of 1978. For articles with core content not made clear by the article title itself, keywords were added by the inventory compiler. These keywords are [bracketed]. Articles that are comprised entirely or substantially of transcribed (or translated) documents are noted with the keyword "transcription." The modern name of a neighborhood, town, or other recognizable reference point is often used as a keyword for articles that refer to names perhaps no longer used or recognized. Given the changes in nomenclature used over the course of the Journal 's life, the keyword "African-American" was used for all articles and transcriptions with significant references to African-American history.
