CatholicThe TIMES The Diocese of Columbus’ News Source February 10, 2019 • FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME • Volume 68:18 New bishop namedBy Tim Puet Catholic Times Reporter The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Robert J. Brennan, auxiliary bishop of the Dio- cese of Rockville Centre, New York, as the 12th bishop of the Diocese of Co- lumbus. He will succeed Bishop Fred- erick Campbell, whose resignation has been accepted by the pope. Bishop Brennan (pictured) will be installed as Bishop Campbell’s succes- sor on Friday, March 29, at Columbus St. Joseph Cathedral. The pope has appointed Bishop Campbell, who has been bishop of Columbus for 14 years, to serve as apostolic administrator to oversee the diocese until then. Announcement of the resignation and appointment was made on Thurs- day, Jan. 31, by Archbishop Christo- phe Pierre, papal nuncio to the United States. Bishops Campbell and Brennan spoke at a morning news conference that day in the diocesan office build- ing and then concelebrated a noontime Mass at the cathedral before Bishop Brennan returned to New York. Bishop Campbell’s 75th birthday was on Aug. 5, 2018. The church’s Code of Canon Law requires that bish- ops submit a letter of resignation to the pope upon reaching age 75. Bishop Campbell did so last year. “I am deeply grateful for all the won- derful support and help that I have en- joyed as bishop of Columbus among all the faithful – the clergy, the laity See NEW BISHOP, Page 3 Inside this issue Man of the Year: Celebrating marriage: Frank Hartge of Gahanna St. The diocesan Marriage and Matthew Church was honored Family Life Office examines as the 2019 Catholic Man of the beauty of the sacrament the Year, Page 2 ahead of World Marriage Duy on Sunday, Feb. 10, Pages 9-13 Catholic Times 2 February 10, 2019 Editor’s reflections by Doug Bean Man of the Year credits ‘enthusiastic Catholics’ with growing his own faith There’s a new The 2019 He said Catholic Man a Bethesda BISHOP IN TOWN of the Year said presentation Whenever an sor, also continues to live in the area the enthusiasm after a Satur- episcopal transi- and assists with Masses on weekends shown by other day vigil Mass tion takes place at Powell St. Joan of Arc Church.
