2013 ANNUAL REPORT INSPIRING CANADIANS - IN SPORT & LIFE 2014/15 Message from the Chair BOARD OF GOVERNORS June 2014 Colin MacDonald, Chair Hon. Jim Prentice, Vice Chair Brad Robertson, Secretary/Treasurer On behalf of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Board of Governors, I am pleased to present the 2013 Annual Report. Scott Cooper 2013 was a successful year for Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, with a lot of effort spent on positioning the Jane Hungerford organization for future sustainability and success. Visitor numbers to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame continued to George Marlatte grow with a significant increase in group visits, facility rentals, and school programs over the previous year. Marnie McBean Scott Moore We acknowledge and thank Governors Jane Hungerford, Marnie McBean and Scott Moore, who retired at the Mike Robinson completion of their terms at the 2014 Annual General Meeting, for their hard work and dedication. Four new Robert Rooney Governors were elected to the Board: Geoff Beattie, C.E.O., Generation Capital Ltd.; Michelle Cameron-Coulter, Honoured Member; Jack Graham, Partner, McInnes Cooper; and Kerrin Lee-Gartner, Honoured Member. We are pleased that the Board of Governors has a strong national presence represented by many regions of Canada. 2014 I would like to thank Dr. Bruce Kidd, Chair of the Honoured Member Selection Committee and his dedicated HONOURED MEMBER Committee Members for their excellent work in identifying the annual class of Inductees. Canada’s Sports Hall of SELECTION COMMITTEE Fame received a record number of nominations in 2013 from across the country from the public, national sport Dr. Bruce Kidd, organizations, and other sport-specific and regional Halls of Fame. Chair Steve Armitage The Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2013 Induction Celebrations presented by the Canada Games were held in Sylvie Bigras Toronto on October 16, 2013 as we returned to our roots and welcomed eleven new athletes and builders into Ian Bird Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. This sold out event enabled us to reconnect with the Toronto community that Stephen Brunt supported Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame since its inception in 1955. MacDonald Marie-José Turcotte Chairman of the Board of Governors Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame INSPIRE CANADA’S SPORTS HALL OF FAME 2013 INDUCTION CELEBRATIONS PRESENTED BY THE CANADA GAMES Induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of sporting achievement in Canada. Our Honoured Members are role models for all Canadians, whose stories inspire us all to be the best we can be in sport and life. Each year, we induct a new class of athletes and builders into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2013 Induction Celebrations presented by the Canada Games were held on October 16, 2013 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, and included the Molson Coors VIP reception for Honoured Members and VISION sponsors, Induction Ceremonies and Gala Dinner. The event was broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet throughout November. All funds raised were used to support Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s programs and Canada’s Sports Hall services. of Fame’s Honoured Members are role models for Canadians of all ages and their stories unite our country and remind us of the core values that define our people. A new education program was launched called “Inspiring Canadian Youth Through Sports Stories” (ICYTSS) funded by the Daryl K. Seaman fund at the Calgary Foundation. Four (ICYTSS) programs were run in 2013 and incorporated video of our Honoured Members’ value- related stories and included presentations by Honoured Members Pat Stapleton and Michelle Cameron-Coulter. The program is also presented in partnership with the National Sports School and included presentations from current athletes. The RBC Equal Access program allowed underprivileged children access to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame for an inspiring and educational field trip. 14 schools were able to visit Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and participate in our education programs at no cost to the schools. An off-site education program was presented by Honoured Member, Pat Stapleton as part of the 2013 induction ceremonies day on October 16, 2013. Over 110 students from three Toronto schools attended. EDUCATE Our current education experience has been developed and presented to in-house audiences of youth through the presentation of six curriculum-based education programs for students from kindergarten to grade 12. Over 15,000 students have had the opportunity to visit Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame over the past two and a half years and learn about the amazing stories of our Honoured Members and have been inspired by lessons these stories hold. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s education programs offer students the opportunity to experience the museum’s twelve galleries, engage with our fifty-three interactive activities (from wheelchair racing to sports broadcasting), and watch the inspiring “Canada’s Greatest Sport Moments” film. Programs also include interactive tours and hands-on experiences with historical artefacts. Stories of sacrifice, dedication, perseverance, teamwork, passion, and resilience can be found within our 540 Honoured Members’ stories.
