One of my favorite hymns is Isaac Watts’ “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” It begins, “When I survey the wondrous cross on which the price of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss and pour contempt on all my pride.” I love the hymn because it captures the essence of Lent and Holy Week. During this time, we symbolically stand at the foot of the cross and are called to remember the great sacrifice that our Lord Jesus made for us. At the foot of the cross we see the great price that was paid for our salvation. In the crucified Jesus, we see that love so strong that it would stop at nothing to save us – the great love of God in Jesus Christ. Watts’ hymn reminds us that compared to Christ’s great love and sacrifice all we have and all we boast of is nothing. Passion Sunday and Holy Week, therefore, call us to remember the love and life of Jesus Christ that calls and claims us. My prayer for you in this holy season is that you may be led by the Holy Spirit to remember the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for you. I hope that in remembering the great love and blessing that Christ has poured out on you, you will help bless and care for others who our Lord Jesus loves more than we can know. As you know, St. Paul’s Church continues to serve, care for, and minister to the needs of not only our parishioners, but to the people here in the heart of Pennsylvania that we call home. This ministry needs your prayers as we go about the work of serving those in need. However, we also know that such work needs the financial support we receive from members and friends like you … our partners in ministry. It is customary for us to receive a special Easter Offering. You will find an Easter Offering Envelope in your box envelope set or on the table at the rear of the church. Your gift will continue to support the mission and ministry of St. Paul’s Church. Please consider making such a gift in this joyful Easter Season when we are called to care for each other. This is one way we can care for others and share the love that Christ Jesus has first poured out on us. As we enter this Easter season, may you continue to find opportunities to reach out in love to this word. God bless and keep you! Daniel+ Palm/Passion Sunday (April 14th) On this day, our worship service will include the blessing and distribution of palm branches, a Solemn Procession, a dramatic reading of the Passion Gospel, a brief homily, and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The liturgy will begin at 10:30 a.m. Maundy Thursday (April 18th) This deeply meaningful liturgy includes (optional) foot washing, scripture readings, a homily, and Holy Communion. Following the distribution of Communion, the rite of the Stripping of the Altar will prepare us for the observance of Good Friday. Hymns will accompany this service. The liturgy will begin at 7:30 p.m. Good Friday (April 19th) On this most solemn and sacred of days, we are invited to gather in the church from Noon until 3:00 pm. During this period of time, you are encouraged to stop by for a time of prayer and meditation. Worshippers will also be invited to walk the ‘Way of the Cross’ as they progress through the 14 Stations (plaques) mount around the walls of the nave of the church that depict the scenes from Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion. And on Good Friday evening an ecumenical worship service will be held at Great Island Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday (April 15th) Our joyful celebration of the Resurrection Feast will feature special music and hymns, scripture readings and sermon, the Administration of Holy Baptism, and a sung celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Please join us as we proclaim: “Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia” … the service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Easter Flowers Donations are now being received for the flowers that will be used to grace our church and altar for the Easter liturgies. The cost is $12.00 per Lily or Hyacinth. Should you wish to order one or more plants, please use the appropriate sign-up sheet at the rear of the church or call Phyllis Durost, (570) 726-6502. All orders need to be received by a date not later than April 12, 2019. NOTE: Checks should be made payable to: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the memo line marked: Easter Flowers. Thank you! The Shippensburg Episcopal Home Needs Our Help One of the beloved institutions of the diocese, The Episcopal Home in Shippensburg, has reached out for our help. They need to raise $200,000 this year in order to continue to provide the highest quality care for those who are unable to pay their living costs. For $25 you will have the pleasure of helping one resident for one day. For $175 you will help one resident for one week. In this season when we celebrate the abundant life given to us in the Risen Christ, please consider sharing with these loving people who reside in a truly Christian place. If you feel called to help, make checks payable to St. Paul's and mark "Shippensburg" on the memo line. Place your gift in the offering plate or mail to the parish office (112 E. Main Street, Lock Haven, PA 16823) Vestry Notes Members of the Vestry are reminded that their scheduled meeting will be held on Sunday, April 14th. As usual, we shall be meeting in the Lord Room following the 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist. Home Visitation and Pastoral Needs If you find yourself in need of a pastoral visit at home or in a hospital, please let me know. I am always happy to visit you in your home. Are there shut-ins that I don’t know about? Who else in our community needs a visit or is facing a difficult situation? Please let me know! Are there other pastoral needs? Perhaps you’d like to renew your marriage vows or chat with me about a baptism or confirmation? Maybe you are regularly attending St. Paul’s but are technically a member of another church/denomination. I would be happy to discuss the process for becoming a fully affiliated member of St. Paul’s parish. The best way to contact me is by telephone: Home (814) 353-0124 or Cell (814) 571-6403. You may also email me at: [email protected]. While I do live in Bellefonte, I’m frequently in Lock Haven, so please do not worry that you are “bothering me.” The Monthly Calendar Sunday, April 7: Lent 5 10:30 a.m., Choral Eucharist – Cn.
