End of Term Friday 31st March 2017 Our Minute’s Silence for the dreadful terrorist attack in London was conducted impeccably and pupils wrote messages of Return to School Tuesday 18th April 2017 support which were displayed in the school. International Start times Women’s Day was celebrated in style and a number of exciting events were run to raise the profile of women in society. Year 11, 8:30 - 8:50am Year 7 - 10, 9:45 - 10am Last night saw the launch of 2 new artworks in school Bank Holiday Monday 1st May 2017 commemorating the life of a local actor and artist, Terry Sue Patt. The panels were painted at the school by an international Street Artist as part of Black History Month. Erkan Mustafa, Year 8 Parent’s Evening Thursday 4th May 2017 who was also in Grange Hill, gave a stirring tribute to his life and reflected on the impact Terry Sue Patt had on a generation School Production Thursday 11th May 2017 of young people, being one of the first regular black characters on television. Wizard of Oz As well as the phenomenal hard work and focus on learning Year 9 Cultural Thursday 18th May 2017 shown by teachers and pupils in Year 11 in the run up to Evening GCSEs, there has been a huge number of enriching events such as British Science Week, the MiSST concert and numerous trips Half Term Monday 29th May - Friday 2nd June 2017 and activities. This makes our community the vibrant, buzzing place that we enjoy being part of so much. We are very excited about the school’s production of The Wizard of Oz in the Return to School Monday 5th June 2017 Summer Term and hope many of you will be able to attend. Sad goodbyes Sadly, we say goodbye to Mr Thomas (Science Teacher) and Mr Gonzales (Head of ICT) who are both moving onto new opportunities and we wish them every success. I hope you have a wonderful Easter holiday (despite the necessary revision for Year 11!) and you and your child come back fully rested for the term ahead when, as well as for Year 11, there will be exams and assessments for all pupils. During the month of May, the History Department, would like us all to share our local history. We will be asking pupils, parents and staff to bring in artefacts, stories and photos of their local history from wherever it may be. We aim to create a collection and display of Frederick Bremer’s local history. Stories could be written on paper and brought in; we can take photos and copy artefacts so they can be taken back home the same day. History associated with Walthamstow is very much welcomed, how- ever we would like to share the diverse and colourful local history of all members of the Frederick Bremer community. The History Department SEX AND RELATIONSHIP EDUCATION WORKSHOPS This half term has been a busy one for our Year 11 pupils. They have completed their mock exams and almost completed their controlled assessments in Citizenship! As well preparing for their GCSEs, Year 11 pupils have been involved in Sex and Relationship Education workshops, delivered by the PSHE team at the school. Pupils explored the differences between positive and negative relationships and how to identify these differences. They also engaged in a reflective and insightful dialogue exploring the complexity of controlling relationships and the context of the situation. This term Year 9s were also given the opportunity to take part in a series of Sex and Relationship Workshops with Jacqui King from Waltham Forest Council. They thoroughly enjoyed finding out about different methods of contraception and the protection that each form of contraceptive offers. The session was engaging, fun and very educational! Ms Byron Head of Citizenship, PSHE & Ethics Follow us @FBSchoolE17 for the latest news @frederickbremerschool www.bremer.org.uk CENTRAL ST MARTINS WORKSHOPS AT FREDERICK BREMER Following on from a visit to an international renowned Art College in January, some of our Year 8 and 9 pupils had an opportunity to take part in a Ceramics workshop with two of the artists who are teachers at the college. 15 pupils were then invited to a follow up workshop where they saw their clay pieces after ‘firing’ and had a chance to finish the project. We were very proud of how each pupil applied themselves to a new way of learning as well as working with the lecturers from Central St Martins who were also impressed with their work and concentration. We are hoping to get a chance to display their final collaborative pieces later in the year as part of the school’s E17 Art Trail exhibit on Friday June 16th. YEAR 8 ART PUPILS EXCEL AT PRINTING The Art department have been really impressed at the level of detail from the Year 8 printing project. They have been working on a themed project based on Antoni Gaudi, analysing natural form textures through drawing and printing which will extend into 3D pulp sculptures. Follow us @FBSchoolE17 for the latest news @frederickbremerschool www.bremer.org.uk YEAR 9 IMPRESSIONIST SELF PORTRAITS Year 9 pupils have been learning about colour theory painting and artists research skills this term. They have studied impressionist painting styles to develop further their large self-portraits on torn cardboard. We are very impressed with how they have taken on this challenging painting project and we look forward to exhibiting these around the school and at the Art Trail when the paintings are completed. BIOMIMICRY WITH YEAR 7 & 8 PUPILS Our Year 7 and 8 Creative Curriculum pupils who completed an Art and Drama project were left wondering what Biomimicry is. One of the groups created masks based on research and experimentation to mimic the look of animals which were then worn by drama pupils who created their own version of the (Urban) Jungle Book and mimicked the movements of animals. All pupils involved did an excellent job of using creative processes to complete high calibre outcomes and understand design systems. Follow us @FBSchoolE17 for the latest news @frederickbremerschool www.bremer.org.uk YEAR 7 CREATIVE CURRICULUM TRIP Earlier this term, the Year 7 Creative Curriculum pupils visited the Barbican Centre to see Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’. One pupil commented saying that “the performance has given me confidence in my instrument and the mu- sic was unique”. We are glad that the Year 7 pupils were able to have this opportunity which has benefited them in different ways. Ms Buckley Head of Creative Arts ANNUAL SPRING CONCERT The annual Spring Concert took place on 23rd March, showing a variety of talent. This concert showed how much progress pupils have made as part of the Music in Secondary Schools’ Trust programme (MiSST). The evening consisted of items from the school orchestra, choir, Year 8 Creative Curriculum orchestra and Year 7 ensembles. The concert particularly showcased how much the Year 7s have developed with only 5 months into learning their instruments. The concert also saw solo items from a number of pupils who also took their ABRSM grade exams the day before. All pupils involved did us proud again this term and have continued to work hard on their instruments and in their ensembles. The winners from each class then performed their pieces to a prestigious judging panel who were Ms Kaltak, Ms Jameson, Ms Kelly and Mr Rowswell. We were so impressed with their hard work and incredible skills in engaging their audience. Well done KS3! Congratulations to our winners: Naomi Year 7, Daniel Year 8, Sasha and Sarah Year 9 Follow us @FBSchoolE17 for the latest news @frederickbremerschool www.bremer.org.uk NATIONAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE OF MACBETH REVIEW On Thursday 2nd March, Year 11 pupils had the opportunity to watch the National Theatre’s performance of Macbeth which was held here at the school. A Year 11 pupil wrote: “The play was a pleasure to watch and exceeded my expecta- tions. The magnificent acting of the actors was captivating and I admired the way in which the actors tried to interact with the audience thus making it even more enjoyable. In particular, I really admired the scene when Macduff learns about the miserable and emotionless death of his child and wife as it was full of pain and suffering which was very convincing. The live performance of the play will really help me as a Year 11 pupil with my GCSE exam because it provided me with a better understanding of the stage direction and the play”.
