Student(s) Name:_____________________________ Module: Garbology Name/Grade: Garbology Date:__________________________________ Activity Description: Each Franklin County residence produces 4-5 pounds, on average, of waste every day. If this waste is not reused, recycled, composted or diverted it makes its way to the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill (FCSL). Every year, nearly 1 million tons of waste is disposed of at the FCSL. During this design challenge you will find out what waste our school produces and find a way to reduce that waste. Problem/Challenge: How can you change your schools view about waste? What steps can you take to help future classmates understand the importance of waste management? Materials: Code Sheet, Sorting Sheet , Aprons, Gloves, Scales, Weighing Bins, Aluminum Bins, Plastic Table Covers, 2 days worth of garbage (at least one full bag for each group) Brainstorm: Discuss as a class: What is Garbology? Why is it important that we study Garbology? Let’s find out how much waste you produce: Circle the amount of waste you produce daily: How much waste does our class/school produce in one day? - Always reuse, recycle or compost - 3 lbs of waste per day ___________________ - Sometimes reuse, recycle or compost? – 4 lbs of waste per day - Never reuse, recycle or compost? – 5 lbs of waste per day Calculate how much waste you produce in: (remember this is an estimate). If every advisory produced the same amount of waste as yours, how much waste would KIPP Columbus produce in: One Week: _________________ One Month: _________________ One Day: _________________ One Year: _________________ One Week: _________________ Lifetime: _________________ One Month: _________________ Design: Team Roles: Decide, as a group, the role of each member. Sorters (2-3 per group) : The Sorters will be getting their hands dirty (with gloves on of course!). These group members will be responsible for sorting the trash into general and specific sort piles. *Not all students are going to want to get their hands dirty, and that is not a problem. Name: ______________________ Name: ______________________ Name: ______________________ Recorder : The Recorder is responsible for documenting the weights of each sort pile as well as the entire bag of trash before sorting has started. Name: ______________________ Weigh Master : The Weigh Master is responsible for weighing each of the sort piles and giving that information to the Recorder. Name: ______________________ As a group read through the sorting instructions, the shorting sheet and the code sheet. Fill in the example sorting sheet below using the code sheet. - In your trash bag you found 20 sheets of school papers, 3 receipts and 4 packets of artificial sweeteners. Fill out the chart below to reflect the waste. Code How Many? Create a presentation with your groups plan that includes the following: q Data collected as a group from the sort q Data collected as an advisory from the sort. q Plan to change waste management at our school q How will you implement your plan so that future students continue waste management? Share: Share your presentation with your advisory group, and other advisory teachers. .
