2010 Asia Military Balance Database Instructions

2010 Asia Military Balance Database Instructions This is the same file used to create the 2010 Asia Military Balance. This database is broken down into two main components: the data spreadsheets and the pivot table spreadsheets. Explanation of the Structure of the Data Spreadsheets The data spreadsheets include spreadsheets with data on equipment, personnel and military spending. Data for equipment and personnel are drawn from the 2010 Military Balance by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Spending data is drawn from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s “Military Expenditures” database. Data on the equipment spreadsheet is broken down, in order, into the following several levels of classification for the purpose of keeping the data organized: 1. Year 2. Branch 3. Type 4. Definition and abbreviation (exist on the same hierarchical level) 5. Model The columns entitled “Is Combat?” and “Is Modern?” are optional additional levels to be used in pivot tables for further organizing the data. Note: All equipment designated as "Naval Aviation," "Marines" or "Naval Infantry" are all included in the database with "Navy" as their branch type. A Note on the Limitations of This Version of the Database This database has the following limitations: • Data (equipment, spending and personnel) for all four selected years is available only for China, Russia, India, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia. • Data for other countries is limited to 2010. • Equipment data is broken down to the “model” level for all four selected years for China, Russia, India, Southdata for North Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia. • Equipment data for other countries is only broken down to the model level for 2010 and then only for selected equipment types like fixed-wing aircraft. Explanation of Pivot Tables The three pivot table spreadsheets in this database were created using Excel 2007’s “Pivot Table” function by drawing on the equipment spreadsheet. Pivot tables provide a method of summarizing table data, located in another spreadsheet, that is easier to read and more meaningful than a simple dump of all the data located in the equipment database would be. Almost all the tables and graphs found in the 2010 Asia Military Balance were created using data summarized by the following three pivot tables: • “By Year Then Type” • “By Year Then Branch” • “By Modernization” The pivot tables sum up all the equipment stocks recorded in the equipment spreadsheet for each country for each year. For example, on the “By Year Then Type” spreadsheet, the numbers located to the right of the field titled “Tank, main battle” in 2010 represent the sum of all record main battle tanks, regardless of model, for each country. As a note, because of the structure of this spreadsheet, these numbers represent a sum across all three branches, Army, Navy and Air Force. To find equipment stocks disaggregated by branch first instead, see the “By Year Then Branch” table. The “By Modernization” table is similar to the “By Year Then Type” table. However, unlike the “By Year Then Type” table, after the type level, the “By Modernization” table is further disaggregated by equipment tagged as either “Modern” or “Not Specified” and then by definition. To create summary tables like the ones located at the beginning of each sub-regions section, use the spreadsheet entitled “By Year Then Branch.” This spreadsheet arranges all the data found in the equipment spread sheet first by year, then by branch, then by type, and then finally by function for each country. Collapse the plus signs on the left of the 1990, 2000, and 2005 main levels to display only data for 2010. Then simply click within the pivot table, press CTRL+A to select the whole table, then copy and paste the table into a Word document to get a complete equipment summary table. The three pivot tables found in this database are just the ones used to create the 2010 Asia Military Balance. New pivot tables for different methods of summarizing the equipment data can be created easily. First, go to the equipment spreadsheet and press CTRL+A to select the whole table (this sets the selected table as the source table for the data to be summarized in your new pivot table). Second, go to the “Insert” tab on the top toolbar and select “Pivot Table” to create a new pivot table. After Excel creates a new pivot table, click within the pivot table to see the “Pivot Table Field List” on the right. Drag countries into the box entitled “Values.” Then drag different attributes like “Year,” “Definition,” into the box entitled “Row Labels.” The order in which the row labels are listed will constitute the manner in which the attributes are leveled and sub-leveled (e.g. by year then by definition). Important: if you modify existing data in the equipment spreadsheet or add new data, changes will not immediately show up in the pivot tables created from the equipment spreadsheet. In order to update pivot tables to reflect any new changes or additions, click the “Data” tab on the top toolbar, then click “Refresh All.” This will update all your pivot tables to reflect any changes made to their corresponding source tables. Note: If you wish to added new types of equipment, new countries or new years, simply enter them into the equipment table. New equipment types and year groups will be reflected in the pivot tables as soon as you press "Refresh All." To add new countries, click on the pivot table you wish to edit and look to the "Pivot Table Field List" on the right-hand side of the screen. Click and drag the countries you wish to add into the pivot table into the box entitled "Row Labels." Next, click on country just added to the "Row Labels" box, and in the pop-up menu that comes Year Branch Type Definition 1990 Navy Aircraft Amphibious assault vehicle 1990 Navy Amphibious Amphibious assault vehicle 1990 Navy Amphibious Amphibious assault vehicle 1990 Navy Amphibious Amphibious assault vehicle 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporSea-going buoy tender 1990 Navy Landing Craft Air cushion vehicle 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, guns 1990 Air Force Air Defense Air defense, guns 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, guns 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, man portable 1990 Air Force Air Defense Air defense, man portable 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Navy Air Defense Air Defense, surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Surface-to-air missile 1990 Air Force Air Defense Air defense, static 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporAuxiliary, ammunition carrier 1990 Navy Logistics and Support 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporMiscellaneous auxiliary 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporIcebreaker 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporHydrographic survey vessel 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporIntelligence collection vessel 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporAir-to-ground missile 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporOceanographic research and survelliance ves 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporOceanographic survelliance vessel 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporSurvey ship 1990 Navy Logistics and SupporHospital ship 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Navy Personnel Carrier Armored infantry fighting vehicle 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne early warning 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, anti-submarine 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, attack 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, attack 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, airborne warning and control system 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Navy Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft, bomber 1990 Air Force Aircraft Aircraft,
