FAMILY CLERIDAE (Checkered Beetles)

FAMILY CLERIDAE (Checkered Beetles)

FAMILY CLERIDAE (Checkered beetles) J. McNamara The clerids include 50 species in Canada and Alaska. Most species are predaceous, the adults feeding on adult bark beetles while the larvae feed on eggs, larvae and adults of wood-boring beetles in galleries. Several species of Enoclerus and Thanasimus are believed to be important in the natural control of bark beetles in coniferous forests. Adults of Cleridae are found mostly on plants, tree trunks or under bark. Some are found on flowers, feeding on pollen. Some species of Necrobia are scavengers and are economically important as pests of stored food, carcasses and skins. In North America the taxonomy of clerids is reasonably well-known but the literature is scattered and a revision of the family would be helpful. A key to the genera has been published by Barr (1962a). There is no comprehensive work for the Canadian fauna; however, most eastern species could be identified using Knull (1951) and most western species using Barr (1962b).
