Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour Cramond District Great War Roll of Honour: Restricted [Covering Barnton, Blackhall, Cramond, Davidson’s Mains, Granton, North Clermiston & Turnhouse] ***Please note that this file does not include Cargilfield School which is located in the Cramond area. The school memorial is large and will appear as a separate roll of honour. 1 This portion of the Edinburgh Great War Roll of Honour is part of a much larger work that will be published over a period of time. It should also be noted that this particular roll is also a restricted one of Great War casualties giving basic details of each casualty: Name. Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service, Number. Special awards. Cause and date of death. Age. Place commemorated or buried. Birthplace. District of Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour name is recorded in. The reason this roll is presently restricted is that we would like to invite and give the greater community the opportunity to fill out the story of each casualty, even helping identify casualties that appear on local memorials that cannot be clearly identified or have some details missing. These latter casualties appear in red with some having question marks in the area that needs to be clarified. It is also worth noting at this point that the names of some casualties appear on more than one district. The larger Roll of Honour [ROH] will also include information about those who served and survived and again the hope is that the wider community will come forward and share the story of their ancestors’ who served in the Great War, whether a casualty or survivor. The larger ROH will contain information such as: Name: Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service. Born when and where? Parent’s names and address. Spouse’s name and address. Details of education. Pre-war employment. Date and place enlisted. Military service including rank, service numbers, units served in, dates of entry into theatre of war. Dates and details of wounds received. How and when the person died, age, place commemorated or buried. Military medals and special awards. The names of any rolls of honour, books, newspaper articles/casualty lists the person is mentioned in and whether a photo has been found. The name of the district of Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour the person’s name is recorded on. If you can help recreate the story, fill in gaps, or help solve an unidentified casualty, then please contact me at the following e-mail address: [email protected] Please note that evidence may be required before details are added to any person named in the ROH. The districts for each portion of the ROH are based on the following map: Ordnance Survey Maps One-inch, 2 nd Edition, Scotland, 1898-1904, Sheet 32. Evidence associating casualties with particular districts has come from: surviving service records located either at the National Archives, London or on www.Ancestry.co.uk or www.Findmypast.co.uk; online National Archive resources located in other countries; the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s website; the Scottish National War Memorial website; the Soldiers Died in the Great War Cd-Rom [N&MP]; birth, marriage, death certificates and census returns located in Register House in Edinburgh; civic, church and school memorials; various rolls of honour; casualty lists, biographical notes and death notices published in newspapers and gravestones located within cemeteries in the appropriate district. © Copyright 2012-Garry A Ketchen 2 Alexander, John Linton.
