In 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention was attended by abolitionist activists who were invited by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. This event was held to discuss women’s rights and celebrated the Declaration of Sentiments that was produced by the delegates of the convention. Who were key influences of the movement? Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton continued the movement for women suffrage—women’s right to vote—through the Civil War. The American Equal Rights Association was created and worked from 1866 to 1869 to secure equal rights for all American citizens with Lucretia Mitt as president. Following the war, in 1868 and 1870 the 14th and 15th Amendment were ratified to guarantee all males, including black males, the right to vote. However, some women suffragist felt it was unfair that the recent ratification of the Constitution did not include women. Therefore, in order to show the lack of support of the 15th Amendment and as a response to the lack of universal suffrage, the National Woman Suffrage Association was founded by Lucy Stone to fight for women’s right to vote. However, not every women suffragist refused to support the 15th amendment and still wanted to fight for women’s right to vote. The American Woman Suffrage Association was then created as a response but did not last. Additionally, the National Council of Women was founded in 1888 by Susan B. Anthony which fought for women’s issues and was composed of national organizations. In 1890, the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association merged and formed the National American Woman Suffrage Association with Elizabeth Cady Stanton as president. In 1910, women were starting to gain the right to vote in some states. Carrie Chapman Catt began a plan to campaign that included state and local suffrage organization. Alice Paul founded the National Women’s Party which embraced more radical approaches. Following World War I, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was finally ratified on August 18, 1920. Women finally gained the right to vote. Please visit https://www.history.com/topics/womens-history/the-fight-for-womens-suffrage for more information.
