THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY OF THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS THE 2018-2019 GEORGE PAPAIOANNOU FELLOWSHIP Research in Modern Greek Political and Social History Deadline: January 15, 2018 The George Papaioannou Fellowship was established by Mrs. Nadia Tzevelekou to honor her father George Papaioannou. A doctor by training and a member of the Greek parliament since 1933, George Papaioannou was the leader of the Trichonis (in Aitolia-Acarnania) sub-division of the National Republican Greek League (EDES). After the end of the Greek Civil War, he served as mayor of Agrinion and a member of the Greek Parliament. The George Papaioannou Papers contain material relating to the Civil War, as well as information about the recognition of the EDES guerilla fighters during the dictatorship in 1969. Other materials include many photographs, various reports by Napoleon Zervas (the leader of EDES), correspondence between Papaioannou and British major G. McAdam, and several issues of local newspapers from the 1950-1960s. Fellows are required to make use of and refer to the George Papaioannou Papers housed at the Archives of the Gennadius Library. Open to all nationalities. Terms: Stipend of €1,000. To be used any period of time between July 2018 and June 2019. School fees are waived for a maXimum of two months. The Fellowship does not include travel costs, housing, board, and other living expenses. The recipient should not plan to work at the Archives of the Gennadius Library during the month of August. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA eXpects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the Gennadius Library. Please note that for the 2018-2019 academic year, the Blegen and the Gennadius libraries may be closed for up to siX months between January and June for reorganization; members of the School will continue to have access to other facilities of the School and other libraries in Athens.
