I would like to personally thank Christopher Dale, Dave Granillo, and Gary Brownell for either playing with, or organizing the three acts that we were able to enjoy during the month. And, not only did we have fun, all three of days when we had live entertainment were very profitable for the club. On that note, I am happy to announce that starting the second weekend in October LIVE MUSIC FRIDAY NIGHTS are returning to the club. We have booked some of our favorite solo acoustic performers to play outside on the patio throughout the month. We will be closely monitoring sales numbers on those days to make sure that having the entertainment is profitable for the club, so PLEASE come down on those nights for dinner to support your Club and also to support some of our favorite local San Diego musicians. I would also like to thanks and commend Tanya DeLong for hosting another very successful work party on Saturday Sept 12th. We had a great turn out, and got a lot accomplished, so thank you to everyone who contributed on that day. The board and the flag appreciate your dedication and commitment. While we have made A LOT of progress in 2020 towards our goal of making the Club a more enjoyable and functional facility, but we still have some things to improve beloved but aging club. The primary focus for now is getting the gate repaired, and maintained. We are currently working on a three-phased repair plan to get the gate working 100% properly. We have completed Phase I, and are working on approving funding for Phases II and III. We hope to have everything completed by the end of this year. We have also entered into a maintenance contract with the company doing the repairs, so going forward we should have minimal or zero issues once the project is complete, and we go into regular maintenance phase. Also, just another reminder that first nominations for our 2021 election are just around the corner, at the October board meeting, so keep that in mind if you are interested for running for office. Stay safe everyone and I hope to see you all at the Club very soon. Regards, Commodore Kevin Witherell FLAG AND BOARD MEETINGS ~ October 20, 2020 ~ Tuesday @ 7 p.m. (The third Tuesday of the month) If you have items for the Board contact Commodore Kevin Witherell in advance to place on Agenda. Commodores ~ First and Second Vices ~ New Members Page 3 First Vice Commodore, Jack Porath The mandated restrictions by the Governor and the County of San Diego remain and we are doing everything we can possibly do to adhere to the dictates to keep members and guests safe and continuing the business. When and where possible, we are bringing some live entertainment for your pleasure and opening the galley when feasible. Please understand that it is not at all pleasant to continually wear masks in a hot galley and when working behind the bar. Thank them for what they do for you and please take into consideration any food or drink delays caused by the change of serving venues, both outside and inside. As it causes us some delays, it is also causing problems for the staff. Take care and God Bless. Jack Porath First Vice Commodore Second Vice Commodore Maria Potter-Wood Happy October! Today, Mike and I went to visit Don Webb at Summer Place a hospice center in El Cajon. He was in good spirits, chatty as always, and telling us that he has made peace with himself. He looked good and was happy to see us. I have continued to water, tend to the plants and clean up the patio every Friday for the enjoyment of all members. I want to thank Chuck Quillen for welding one of the broken patio chairs. You did a great job Chuck! Have you noticed that about 5-6 patio chairs are missing? About two and a half years ago someone borrowed a stack of 10 chairs, they were never returned. This year, I noticed that around the end of June thru July other chairs went missing. We always had 6 chairs to a table and about 8 chairs around the fire pit, now we have about 4 chairs around the fire pit. Next month, I will start the Christmas Drive for personal care items for the homeless teenagers at the Storefront without my co-chair of many years, Anita Sgobba. If you would like to co-chair this very rewarding event, please contact me. The Storefront is under the auspices of the City of San Diego Youth Services. More information will be forthcoming next month. Entertainment by Christopher Dale ~ [email protected] CLEAN-UP DAY Hello everyone! Our clean-up day was a success as usual. Kudos to the Ikuna Koa team as 14 members of the paddling club showed up and worked hard! We also had a couple of eager members, Steele Young and Brian Niznik, who started early and got things going! Chris Dale also came in early to set up the stage for the band later that day. The clean-up crew (in alphabetical order) included: Jeff Caufield, Carlos Cuervo, Chris Dale, Dave & Tanya DeLong, Mica Gaila, Paula Goleta, Kristen Luther, Cash Martin, Hau Oli Martin, Justice Martin, Kai Martin, Keona Martin, Mikaela Martin, Corey Mitskevich, Brian Niznik, Ian Poirier, Greg Shaw, Eddie Villavicencio, Steele Young When I arrived, Steele was weed-whacking away, Brian picking up trash and big items from around the boatyard, Chris was setting up the stage, and the Ikuna Koa team was going to town cleaning their equipment and area, including their shed (which as you may have noticed they are currently remodeling and looks amazing!).
