Sonnichsen Special Collections Department University of Texas at El Paso Library Juárez Cathedral Archives, MF 489 2 HISTORICAL SKETCH Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe del Paso del Rio del Norte (Ciudad Juárez, Mexico), was founded in 1659 by Francisan missionaries and was part of the Custody of Saint Paul, but later transferred under the authority of the bishop of Durango. The Mother Mission, as it is sometimes called, was the repository of all the church records within a probable radius of fifty or more miles until the Mexican War of 1846-1848. After the War, the Diocese was divided, and cases over which a bishop had jurisdiction were sent to Santa Fe. The term “Juárez Cathedral” is of rather recent usage, since the old mission in Ciudad Juárez became a cathedral only in 1958. In the 1970s, a larger building was erected beside the old mission to serve as the cathedral. Some church records from the El Paso del Norte area remained with the parishes, and some were transferred to diocesan centers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, or Durango, Durango, Mexico, but many local administrative records and sacramental records remained in Paso del Norte, later re-named Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Although many of these early documents have disappeared, some have been found and microfilmed. ARRANGEMENT Filmed in approximate chronological order, as found, and numbered rolls 1-25; Part 2 consists of microfilm received from the Catholic Archives of Texas and is numbered as MF489, Part 2, rolls 1-4. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Consists mostly of marriage records, prenupual investigations, and correspondence; contains some records of births, baptisms, confirmations, and burials from the area of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. Contains sacramental records from Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Paso del Norte (in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua) and the missions or communities of Senecú, San Lorenzo, and El Carrizal, in Chihuahua, Mexico, and of Socorro, Ysleta, San Elizario, and Nuestra Señora de las Caldas in what is now Texas. PROVENANCE The first fourteen rolls of film were microfilmed by Southwest Microfilm for the University of Texas at El Paso Library from the cathedral’s archives and miscellaneous found documents in 1983 and 1987. Some 1,000 missing documents were found in the archives of the El Paso Public Library and returned after microfilming. Another group documents from the missing archives were located by Mark Koenigsberg and filmed for the UTEP collection. The Church of the Latter Day Saints had eleven rolls of microfilm of missing documents which were purchased by UTEP--in this collection numbered 15-25. 4,000 missing Juárez Cathedral Archives, MF 489 3 documents of the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Paso del Norte (Ciudad Juarez, Chih.) recovered from the Catholic Archives of Texas in Austin, Texas, through the courtesy of the Most Reverend John E. McCarthy, Bishop, and Gary Bryson, Archivist, were microfilmed and are numbered in this collection as MF489, Part 2, rolls 1-4. RESTRICTIONS None.
