The opinions within are those of the writers and do not necessarily represent the views of the PHCA. This publication is available to members in good standing of the Pharaoh Hound Club of America only. CH Shema’s Khara Mia 1984-1995 “Mia” was bred and co-owned by Joyce Martin, of Shema Pharaohs Reg. She was owned by Pam Haig. Mia finished quickly from the 6-9 puppy classes and began her Specials career earlier than anticipated. She was the second Pharaoh Hound in the U.S. to be honored with an All-Breed Best in Show win, under Judge Dorothy Nickles. The first All-Breed Best in Show win had gone to her mother: DC Shema’s Khan Khara CD. That same year Mia was awarded a second All-Breed Best in show under judge Dr. Brandt. Although never fortunate enough to earn a National Specialty BOB, she was a National BOS winner. She was awarded 3 Western Specialty BOB’s; the final one from the Veterans class. She was also awarded BOB at Westminster the only year she was entered there. Mia was only bred twice. The first time to her grandfather, DC Shema’s Ghazzi Khan. From that litter came SBIS Ch Shema’s Mia Mystic Warrior (Sunny) and Group winning/placing Ch Shema’s Mia Ghost Dancer (Dancer), Ch Shema’s Mia Eyota Duza (Duzer) Her second experience at motherhood she was bred to Multi SBIS Ch Beltara’s Pantooset Oberon. This litter produced SBIS Ch Shema’s Mia Spellbound (Bounder), DC Shema’s Mia Splash FCh (Splash), Ch Shema’s Mia Jubilee (Jubilee), DC Shema’s Mia Winds of the Gods FCh (Windy). Mia HATED lure coursing and didn’t understand why anyone should be out of bed at that early hour of the morning. Mia was a delight to live with and can be found in all of the Mia Pharaoh pedigrees, as our foundation bitch. Mia shown going Best in Show She was handled for most of her career by Brian Phillips, who has since retired. 2 President’s Message Dear PHCA membership, While at our recent National Weekend, a board meeting was held. The following is a brief synopsis of our two pending projects. Website design – Cynthia has gotten a couple more proposals and, thanks to a nice referral from George Lovato, we may have a promising lead. Cynthia will work with George to negotiate pricing and will report back to the board. Mentoring requirement program – Rita and Sheila have developed a set of criteria that the board will review and ratify in order to put the Editor’s Notes program into effect. Hope everyone is enjoying the Thanks again to all those who helped with the National/Western new look to the Scribe as much weekend. A special thank you to Vickie Bellitto, Carmen Davis, as I am. There were three vacancies for the AKC Board of Directors Class of 2016. The three vacancies were filled by the following individuals: William J. Feeney, Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club Thomas Powers, Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Patricia M. Cruz, Heart of the Plains Kennel Club There was a correction to the December 2011 minutes as follows: There was an error in the reading of the proposed amendment to Chapter 16, Section 1 of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows. The criteria for a major for reserve at the National Specialty for each breed is twice the number of the dogs required for a five point major, and not just a five point major, as read. This correction has already been noted in the online minutes and the transcript. There were no other corrections, and the minutes were approved as published. Report about the Canine Partner's Program: Since the program's inception, cumulative trial entries have topped 30,000. Last year, 85 percent of the events that were eligible to allow AKC Canine Partners did invite them. This figure is up to 89 percent so far this year. Report about the "My Dog Can Do That Program": The "My Dog Can Do That" program is getting off to an impressive start: 230 dogs participated in the program at the Rose City Kennel Club Dog Show in Portland, Oregon, and 204 dogs took part in the program at the Middle Peninsula Kennel Club in Doswell, Virginia. The majority of these dogs had never tried an AKC event. AKC Operating Budget: The AKC was pleased to report that the 2012 budget is projected to show an operating surplus of 1.7 million dollars. Items That Were Discussed and/or Voted on: The first vote was to have been on the proposed amendment to Chapter 16, Section 1, new sixth paragraph of Rules Applying to Dog Shows. The proposed amendment was brought forward by the Progressive Dog Club. This amendment would have created a new three-point major for the dog designated Reserve Winners Dog and the bitch designated Reserve Winners Bitch at one National Specialty each year, specified by the AKC Breed Parent Club. The Progressive Dog Club requested that the amendment be withdrawn, based on an error in the reading at the December meeting and on input it has received. The club plans to resubmit an amended version at a later date. There being no input, the amendment was withdrawn. 5 (continued) The second vote was on the proposed amendment to delete Chapter 1, Section 3 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows -- Dog Shows Defined. The proposed amendment was brought forward by the Delegate Dog Shows Rule Committee. This rule change would remove references to a show limited to puppies and to dogs that have placed at previous shows as there are no such events and none have been held for many years. There were two-thirds of the affirmative, and this amendment was adopted effective immediately. The next vote was on four interrelated and co-dependent amendments. Chapter 6, Section 3 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows -- Premium Lists and Closing Entries, removes all reference to seven groups, eliminating a specific number; Chapter 3, Section 1 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows -- Dog Show Classifications, splits the Sporting, Hound and Working Groups, creating 11 groups; Chapter 3, Section 15 - 20 of Rules Applying to Dog Shows -- Dog Show Classifications, removes all references to seven groups, eliminating a specific number; and Chapter 2 of Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline -- Registrable Breeds By Groups, which splits the Sporting, Hound and Working Groups creating 11 groups.
