A Very Informative Account of a Great Filmmaker!By CustomerOverall, not a bad book, but for those expecting a biography of Robert Wise, this is NOT the book for you. Instead, Robert Wise: The Motion Pictures presents a film-by-film analysis of the director's work. I think those who would benefit most are students of screenwriting and film history. A nice perk of the book is that it includes interviews with those who knew Wise. The following interviews are included:Jacqueline White (1948's Mystery in Mexico)Gordon Gebert (1951's The House on Telegraph Hill)Billy Gray (1951's The Day the Earth Stood Still)Janette Scott (1956's Helen of Troy)Jack Young (1956's Tribute to a Bad Man)Neile Adams Michael Dante (1956's Somebody Up There Likes Me)Neile Adams (1957's This Could Be the Night)Ralph Votrian (1957's Until They Sail)Eddie Foy III (1958's Run Silent Run Deep)George Chakiris (1961's West Side Story)Heather Menzies-Urich (1965's The Sound of Music)Neile Adams Gavin MacLeod (1966's The Sand Pebbles)Alan Oppenheimer (1968's Star!)Sandra de Bruin (1971's The Andromeda Strain)Lindsay Wagner (1973's Two People)Alan Oppenheimer Rene Auberjonois (1975's The Hindenburg)Marsha Mason (1977's Audrey Rose)Alan Dean Foster (1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture)Troy Beyer (1989's Rooftops)Gillian Barber (2000's A Storm in Summer)In addition to his interview for The Sand Pebbles, Gavin MacLeod also wrote the foreword. Douglas E. Wise, Robert Wise's nephew, wrote the intro. I think the book is worth reading, but the more familiar you are with the films, the more you will enjoy this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Joe Jordan's BooksBy CustomerIn writing about Mr. Wise, thru his history of the pictures he either produced, directed, or edited, we learned not only about the man, but about those who worked with and for him...I did not know for example that he actually got his start by working on One of the top movies of all times, as chosen by filmmakers every year, "Citizen Kane"... and that his early films were ever so important in making him the director that most people know today, and boy what a string of hits, including the top three: West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and The Sand Pebbles...but then I was not surprised, since Mr. Jordan wrote a similar book on William Castle, who was part P.T. Barnum and part Roger Corman, and in the same style of telling this fascinating man's history by weaving in and out of his films by telling their story and again augmenting them with tales by those who worked with and for the man.In both books, I found it much more rewarding to tell the story thru the films of Msrs.Wise and Castle, as it gave me a hunger to see those films first hand and thanks to , I was able to rent most of these Cinematic pieces of art...upon reading about them thru Mr Jordan's books....I only hope that there will be many more to come...and I am looking forward to reading them on my Kindle Fire...Bill White Robert Wise, the young editor of Citizen Kane, earned his directorial stripes at RKO, particularly with The Body Snatcher and The Set-Up, films of amazing quality and dark sensibility. Wise later found himself at Warner Brothers, MGM, and 20th Century Fox, consistently directing pictures of depth and versatility. The man behind the searing crime film, Odds Against Tomorrow, followed such success with the upbeat West Side Story. Wise guided the great, multi-character drama of Executive Suite and also turned his attention to warfare with The Sand Pebbles. He was the personification of the finest, old style ldquo;studio directorrdquo; and ultimately became a two-time winner of the Academy Award for Best Director. Wise not only made films his way, he made them the right way, directing classics such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sound of Music, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Joe Jordanrsquo;s book, which includes over twenty interviews, presents a studious, solemn analysis of the complete Robert Wise canon. ldquo;Robert Wise remains one of the great archishy;tects of American movies of this last century; the steady, easy personality, hiding a will of steel that allowed him to guide his movies with a hand of knowledge, and authority, and soar in every single genre he undertook. nbsp; With one of the most wide-ranging careers of any filmmaker ever, Joe Jordanrsquo;s book more than does Robert Wise justice in critically assessing his incredibly versatile work, as well as honoring the man who quietly created some of the finest and most famous movies of all time.rdquo;- C. Courtney JoynerAuthor of The Westerners: Interviews with Actors, Directors, Writers, and Producersnbsp;ldquo;Meticulous research by Joe Jordan makes this a thorough study of director Robert Wise, which classic film fans will appreciate. nbsp;Jordan examines the body of Wisersquo;s work in a film-by-film journey, his information woven neatly with interviews of participants providing the voices. nbsp; They are the soundtrack, and Jordanrsquo;s careful presentation of the material is the long tracking shot that lures us into a sudden, sharp, and breathtaking close-up, echoing the directorrsquo;s own careful craftsmanship.rdquo;- Jacqueline T. LynchAuthor of Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star.nbsp;ldquo; With this extremely readable volume film historian Joe Jordan gives us a rigorshy;ous examination of Robert Wisersquo;s career and contributions to American cinema. nbsp;Wise often goes underappreciated but Jordan does this pioneer justice. nbsp;Jordanrsquo;s prose is accessible and uncompromising at once. nbsp; This book is a must read for anyone who appreciates the gift of cinema to humanity.rdquo;- Tony KashaniAuthor of Movies Change Lives: Pedagogy of Constructive Humanistic Transformation Through Cinema (Minding the Media)About the AuthorJoe Jordan is a motion picture historian and has taught film appreciation courses for several years.
