Here at Lakeside we’ve got some of the best things to do on Hayling Island right here in our grounds: Lake and coastal walk Enjoy a stroll around the glistening lake and along the coastal walk, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the sea – watch out for flying golf balls though, as this walk crosses the golf course. Fishing on the lake Dawn ’til dusk With carp, perch, roach and tench swimming in its waters, our lake is ideal for a spot of fishing. All users must have a licence but there’s no charge for guests, simply speak to our Leisure team to organise your angling time. Gardens Tour Ably conducted by Gavin or one of the team from our Grounds team, this 45-minute stroll around the hidden treasures and curiosities of Lakeside is always fun and informative, with a couple of laughs thrown in for good measure. Lakeside & Hayling Island || Discover our hotel and the outdoors BEACHES, WALKS AND WILDERNESS Hayling Island and the surrounding area really does specialise in the great outdoors, so whether you’re into woodland walks, beachside strolls or watching wildlife, there’s something for everyone. Hayling Beach Three miles of sandy and shingle beach, facing out into the Solent, that has won both the European Blue Flag and the Keep Britain Tidy award, Hayling beaches benefit from sea breezes which keep the temperature just about perfect most of the year round. PO11 0AS £2.90 for 8-minute drive 2 hours parking Southsea seafront Less than a mile from Portsmouth city centre, this mainly shingle beach is home to Southsea Pier, winner of ‘Pier of the Year’ 2018. Restored to its former glory, this iconic structure has been featured in an eclectic mix of media, from The Who’s ‘Tommy’ to Mr. Bean. PO5 3PB Pay & Display 27-minute drive parking Forest of Bere Home to a mixture of woodland, heathland, farmland and open space, the Forest of Bere has walking and cycling routes for all range of abilities. Although the paths are usually fine we, recommend taking your wellies, just in case. PO17 6JB 32-minute drive Lakeside & Hayling Island || Discover our hotel and the outdoors Hayling Billy Trail An easy 6-mile return walk that follows the old Hayling Billy railway line past Langstone Harbour. Popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders, many of whom enjoy a quick break from travelling at the Ship Inn near Langstone. PO11 0EH Free parking 8-minute drive Millennium Promenade Portsmouth A celebration of Portsmouth’s rich history, three kilometres of promenade link all the points of interest on the waterfront. Built at the turn of the millennium, the route is indicated by a chain motif set into the surface to symbolise the historic chain that was tightened across the harbour entrance. PO5 3AA 26-minute drive Queen Elizabeth Country Park Bigger than the island of Gibraltar, the local council has invested over £2m in improving this pristine parkland over the last two years. The many walks and cycleways are slightly hilly but lovely in good weather, and the new visitors’ centre restaurant is ideal for a cuppa afterwards. PO8 0QE £7 day parking 27-minute drive Lakeside & Hayling Island || Discover our hotel and the outdoors Farlington Marshes Unusually for a seaside area, Farlington Warner Recommends Marshes is actually better in winter than in summer. A huge number of migratory wildfowl descend on the area. The easy 4km circular walk around the marshes is mostly on the sea wall. Keep an eye out for short-eared owls and peregrine falcons. PO6 1SR Free parking 16-minute drive Staunton Country Park A listed landscaped parkland and forest that also includes an ornamental farm, ornamental lake, follies, maze, glasshouses and walled garden. The shell house is a particular highlight, built in 1828 and covered in shells from Hayling Island. The park also has three walking trails for various abilities. PO9 5HB Free entry 17-minute drive to park £9 for visitor centre Lakeside & Hayling Island || Discover our hotel and the outdoors DAYS OUT Our team have picked out three of their favourite days out for you to choose from. The Hayling Ferry to Portsmouth is more effective than even the strongest coffee for waking you up, while our local towns and villages offer a somewhat slower, more relaxed pace. Hayling Ferry to Portsmouth It’s an easy drive to Portsmouth from Hayling Island, but for a taste of sea life nothing beats the ‘Pride of Hayling’ foot ferry. It only takes three minutes and the feel of the sea breeze on your face is a delight. PO11 0BY £2.75 £2.90 for 11-minute drive per crossing 2 hours parking Emsworth/Bosham Warner Recommends These two local villages are both worth a visit. Emsworth is a picturesque fishing village, with Georgian houses along narrow streets and waterside views. Bosham is steeped in history (Harold sailed for Normandy in 1064 from Bosham), and is a sanctuary for migrating wildfowl. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your adventure: • Check the weather and be prepared with wet weather gear, or a coat, hat and maybe sunscreen when necessary • Wear sensible shoes or walking boots, most of our routes are on well-worn paths, tracks, trails or woodland and pastoral land.
