The traditional discipline, which include petrochemical, plastics, food production and drugs, has now been broadened to include the new field of nanotechnology, molecular biology, the environment and information technology. Chemical engineers design both products and processes, manage operations of processes and research the solutions to environmental problems. Sudan is distinguished with its various natural resources in the field of agriculture and abundant mineral and oil resources. Recently, the country has started a pace towards a comprehensive industrial development. This calls for the integration of the various sectors to achieve the proper utilization of the industrial development bearing in mind environmental sustainability and balanced development in view to achieve a comprehensive & integrated economic development. Since its foundation, the department of chemical engineering is playing an important role in the support of industrial sector through its graduates. In line with its responsibility towards the nation and commitment to good quality of engineers, the department offers a diploma/M.Sc. program in chemical engineering in accordance with international requirements and specifications .This is made to enhance the acceleration of, and to achieve a country wide industrial development. 3 Diploma/M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering (DChE/MChE) University of Khartoum 2: Rationale: The Faculty of Engineering offers M.Sc. degree programs (both thesis and without- thesis) in department of chemical engineering. The chemical engineering’s master degree with thesis is designed to train engineers to independently seek a new knowledge in their respective engineering discipline, frequently crossing disciplines in the search for that new knowledge. The without-thesis (Research Paper) master degree in chemical engineering is intended to meet the continuing education needed by engineers in industry in order to broaden their engineering foundation and achieve career advancement. This program is primarily aimed at applying chemical engineering principles to develop technical products and to design, control and improve industrial processes. Students also learn to take environmental and safety issues into account during all phases of the process (research, development, design and operation). 3: Objectives 1. To provide student with the necessary skills, knowledge and insight in specialist field of chemical engineering. 2. To qualify engineers to play active roles towards industrial progress. 3. To offer high quality degree programs, which fulfills the learning outcomes requirement of national & international accreditation bodies in the field of chemical engineering. 4. To train students to solve fundamental research problems and to make a process. Product design taking into account safety, environmental aspects and sustainability. 4: Admission Requirements • The applicant must satisfy the general rules of registration as specified by the Graduate College of the university. • The applicant must be holding an honors Degree in Chemical Engineering of the University of Khartoum or its equivalent. • If admitted, the applicant has to be a full-time student throughout the program duration. 4 Diploma/M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering (DChE/MChE) University of Khartoum 5: Registration Requirements As per academic Regulations for Postgraduate Studies 2011 (section 4.2), the student must first register for the diploma/Master Program and then pursue to Master degree at the end of the second semester based on his/her academic performance. 6: Program Duration and Structure The study program comprises as illustrated in Table (1): . A group of nine courses to be covered in the first two semesters, equivalent to 24 credit hours. By the end of the first two semesters those who scored an average of 60% or more will proceed for the Master stage as detailed in the examination rules below. A group of three courses to be covered in the third semester equivalent to eight credit hours. A research paper of three credit hours to be started within the third semester guided and supervised by staff member then to submit a report within 45 days after the end of the third semester examinations.
