D.V.BORKAR PREFACE It gives me great pleasure in presenting the Fourteenth Annual Report of Goa University for the academic year 1993-99. The Report is presented in six parts. Part 1 - General Administration, Part 2 - Authorities of the University, Part 3 PG Departments/Centres on the University Campus, Part 4 - Affiliated Colleges, professional and General, Part 5 - Recognized Institutions and Part 6 - Financial Statement. The Report has been compiled by the University, based on the information provided by the various administrative sections, PG Departments/Centres departments, affiliated Colleges and Recognized Institutions. It has been our experience that the process of collecting information is time consuming and as well as difficult. Besides the information obtained is often incomplete. This has caused difficulties in the editorial work, leading to delays in finalization of the Report. It will be helpful, if all the concerned sectors of our University give a prompt response and provide complete information to the Editorial Committee in the future, so that the Annual Report is brought out in time and is also complete in all respects. ' The bygone year has been another important year in the consolidation and build up of the academic and research activities at the University. New academic programmes were launched in this year; e.g., PG Diploma in Applied Plant Sciences (Dept. of Botany), Master of Laws (Faculty of Law), B.Sc.(Vocational) in Biotechnology and in Industrial Chemistry (affiliated Colleges and proposals for new programmes and facilities were made to the University Grants Commission and other funding agencies. The University participated in a major Indo-French scientific programme, viz., Indian Ocean Experiment (Ind° Ex), under which more than 20 instrumented high altitude balloons for upper atmospheric data collection/analysis were launched from the University campus during Jan-Feb. 1999, so as to understand the Indian monsoons. Many new academic and other buildings, laboratory equipment and facilities were added to the University campus in this period. The University also received its IX Plan allocation of funds from the UGC in this period as well as a special grant from the Planning Commission. I express my sincere gratitude to H.E. Governor of Goa and Visitor, Goa University for the keen interest he has shown in the functioning of the University.. I am extremely thankful to the State Government for all the continued support in the implementation of the objectives. I also thank the University Grants Commission and the Planning Commission for the IX Plan grants allocated to the University. I also place on record my sincere thanks to the members of Court, Academic Council, Executive Council Planning Board and other Bodies of the University for their understanding and cooperation.. My grateful thanks are also due to all the teaching and non-teaching staff members and students of the University for making 1995-99 yet another successful year. Taleigao Plateau Professor B. S.
