MEDIA ADVISORY – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Victoria Anderson-Gardner wins the Protégé Prize – selected by Alanis Obomsawin, winner of The Glenn Gould Prize TORONTO – 29 January 2021. The Glenn Gould Foundation is delighted to announce the winner of the $15,000 Protégé Prize, Victoria Anderson-Gardner. The winner of the Protégé Prize was chosen by distinguished Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, the winner of this year’s Glenn Gould Prize. Victoria Anderson-Gardner is an award winning Ojibwe filmmaker from Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario. They completed their thesis film for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree under the School of Image Arts at Ryerson University. Victoria is focused on creating Indigenous content, showcasing underrepresented communities and using their skills as a filmmaker to educate and inspire. Victoria is a director and producer who has worked on a variety of productions, including “Tenaya” (TIFF’s Big Pitch Audience Choice Award 2020), “Becoming Nakuset” (CBC Gem and Loud Roar Productions short doc, which won the Best Short Film, Audience Choice Award at imagineNATIVE 2020), “The Hurt That Binds Us” (Voices With Impact short doc; won Best Documentary at the Ryerson University Film Festival), and “In Search of a Perfect World” (CBC Docs POV, hosted by Peter Mansbridge, credited as additional director). Alanis Obomsawin noted her pleasure at being able to celebrate and assist the creative career of a young and talented filmmaker: "Upon watching the work, I was very moved and impressed with how professional and serious Victoria was. I was touched and happy to see the responsibility in such a young person, and how Victoria was really listening to Nakuset in ‘Becoming Nakuset.’ This is work that is worth being recognized and encouraged.” "To have this recognition bestowed upon me by Alanis Obomsawin is something I will take with me for the rest of my life,” said Victoria. “I dedicate this to all of those who have passed, the few who are living, and the multitudes of those who are yet to be born."
