A Message from the President …

Share Enjoy Enrich Newsletter of the Faculty Women’s Club, University of Alberta Vol. 30, No. 2a December 2016 A message from the President … As the semester draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, I hope you are all keeping busy and warm! The FWC has had a productive fall. First, we began our year with a successful and well-attended Wine and Cheese Registration Event. Thank you to Cathy, Pat, and others for all your hard work in providing and preparing the food, to Marie and others for manning the registration table, and to those members who volunteered their time at the event to welcome and provide tours to new members. Second, we have recently launched our new website; thank you to Christine for your patience, persistence, and hours of work in making this happen! Finally, the Program Committee (Cathy, Katia, and Judith) is working hard to plan some upcoming club-wide events, including the Robin Hood pantomime at Fort Edmonton in December and the Alberta Legislature tour in March. Personally, I have been enjoying my last few weeks of leave with Emma (now ten months old!) and Kevin. We are looking forward to Emma’s first Christmas with family in Vancouver, and even dressed her up as an elf for Halloween in anticipation. I will return to work full time in January, which seems a bit daunting – but I know many thousands of parents have done it before me, and I know that I have a wonderful network of support from the FWC. In closing, I wish you all a holiday that is warm, bright, and full of fun and friendship! Whatever your festival may be, warm wishes for the season flow to you all. May the coming year be full of peace and joy. New Year’s Resolutions? Do you want to start the New Year off right? Consider joining one of the FWC’s 27 interest groups, listed in the directory and in your August newsletter. There are two new groups this year: Cookbook Club and Walking Southgate Mall. In fact, you can get out for some fun exercise and good company with one of three walking groups! Members of the Walking Group in September 2016 December 2016 www.ualberta.ca/faculty-and-staff/faculty-womens-club 2 Invitation You are cordially invited to our annual Celebration Coffee Morning in honour of our long-standing FWC Members Wednesday, February 8, 2017 10:00 am to 11:30 am Saskatchewan Room University of Alberta Faculty Club RSVP Sarah Moore [email protected] In the interests of privacy, we do not publish contact information for our members or executive committee. December 2016 www.ualberta.ca/faculty-and-staff/faculty-womens-club 3 Getting to know your new Executive We are very excited this year to have five very competent new members on our Executive: Ellen Calabrese-Amrhein, Treasurer; Jan Heaman, Vice-President; Judith Palfreyman and Katia Tonkin, Program Committee; and Frances Zupko, Secretary. Thanks to these ladies for stepping up to the plate. Ellen Calabrese-Amrhein (Treasurer) Ellen is originally from the U.S., moving to Toronto (U of T) in 1986 where she lived and worked for 17 years. In 2003 her family moved to Edmonton (U of A) and that was when she joined the FWC. She has three adult sons, a lovely daughter-in-law, and an adorable granddaughter, all living in Edmonton. Ellen was initially attracted to the club by how friendly and welcoming it was towards its new members. She has held various positions on the Executive and has been a co-convener of a few interest groups. Currently she belongs to the afternoon book club and attends the Spring Luncheon and other activities offered by the Program Committee. She has many interests: hiking, skiing, gardening, reading, and travelling, to mention a few. Her most enjoyable activity is visiting and playing with her granddaughter. Jan Heaman (Vice-President) Janice Marr-Heaman was born in Ontario to a musical family of eight children, growing up around the Great Lakes. She graduated from Nursing in London, Ontario, working in orthopedics and geriatrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Jan has a special interest in the power of natural healing, growing a large organic garden, and preparing and preserving whatever nature provides in the Alberta climate. She has a passion for sports and outdoor activities and is presently playing ringette. She also enjoys being creative: sewing, knitting, and home decor projects are an important part of her life. Once her two children moved away, Jan found more time for herself and joined FWC in 2013, jumping in with both feet on the Program Committee. What she appreciates about the Faculty Women’s Club is actually what is found in the club’s motto: Fun, Friendship, and Support. December 2016 www.ualberta.ca/faculty-and-staff/faculty-womens-club 4 Judith Palfreyman (Program Committee) Judith Palfreyman arrived in Canada in October 2015, from Sheffield, England when her husband took up a post in the Faculty of Nursing. They were accompanied by their teenage daughter, while two older daughters remained in the UK. It was a real roller-coaster of a year – from new schools, new jobs, and new weather – and yes, Judith knows it wasn’t a real winter! FWC proved to be a lifeline. Judith became involved with FWC 2.0 and has valued the different groups and friends that she has made. Navigating Edmonton was also made easier with the help of the Walking Group, who gave Judith the courage to drive on the wrong side of the road and battle with the GPS, along with great company, conversation, and scenery! A registered nurse, Judith is currently working to obtain her Canadian registration. In the meantime, she has just started a new post as a project coordinator within the Faculty of Nursing. When not working, Judith enjoys running, Barre classes, and being outdoors. She intends to try skiing this winter – something she swore she would never do! Katia Tonkin (Program Committee) Katia is a Professor in the department of Medicine and Dentistry and a Medical Oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute, specializing in breast cancer and gyn cancer treatment with a focus on clinical trials. She attended medical school in London, UK, but most of her postgraduate training was here in Canada. Katia is married and has two adult children. She loves to travel, downhill ski, bike, and play tennis. Recently she has taken up cross-country skiing as well. She has lived in Edmonton since 1997 and enjoys the FWC tennis group and the evening book club. She finds the group to be full of like- minded ladies with great life experiences that make them all so interesting to be involved with. Frances Zupko (Secretary) Frances grew up in the north of England. She studied at the University of Sheffield and Hallam, where she earned a degree in hotel catering and institutional management. Frances met her husband Jack while working at the University of London. They lived in the USA for 27 years. They have a son and daughter-in-law, both of whom are schoolteachers in Tennessee. Frances and Jack live on the U of A campus in connection with the faculty in residence program. Frances has very much appreciated FWC activities and the friends she has made there. She enjoys sewing, quilting, gardening and walking, and relaxing at their summer home in Manitoba. December 2016 www.ualberta.ca/faculty-and-staff/faculty-womens-club 5 Upcoming Special Events Many thanks to Cathy Dursun, Judith Palfreyman, and Katia Tonkin for organizing our special events for the coming year. Pantomime at Fort Edmonton Park When: Sunday, December 18, 2016, 2:00 p.m. Where: Capitol Theatre, Fort Edmonton Park Cost: Pre-booked. Tickets purchased in advance. On December 18, 2016, a group of FWC members and their guests will be attending Robin Hood: A Christmas Pantomime at Fort Edmonton Park. A pantomime is a favourite British family tradition that dates back to the late 1800s. Familiar stories are adapted in goofy ways. If you have signed up for the Pantomime and have not yet purchased your tickets, please purchase them through the Fort Edmonton Park website (https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca) and identify the organization as U of A Faculty Women’s Club. The matinee starts at 2:00 p.m., so we will start meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Capitol. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Cathy Dursun by email or phone. If you are not able to make Sunday, December 18, 2016, and would like to see the Pantomime, shows run throughout the Christmas holidays. Please check the Fort Edmonton Park website to purchase tickets.
