Mid-1600’s The Dutch and the English settlements use the Creek for agriculture and industrial commerce. RAPID INDUSTRIALIZATION 1850s Country’s 1st Kerosene Refinery. 1860s 1st Modern Oil Refinery; Railroad installed. 1880s Astral Oil Company, later Standard Oil. 1920-30s Creek evolves as a major shipping hub, a home to sugar refineries, hide tanning plants, canneries & copper wiring plants. A POLLUTED WATERWAY Prior to mid-20th Century: No Industry or Government Regulation on disposal of unwanted by products caused major pollution of the Creek. 17-30 million gallon of underground oil spill, copper contamination, hydrogen sulfide, old tires, car frames, seats and loose paper. LATE 20TH CENTURY A NEW BEGINNING Remediation begins, life returns to the Creek. 1997 The Newtown Creek Alliance forms. 2017 The Newtown Creek Vision Plan begins.
