HENDRO FIRMAWAN Undergraduate Program , 2004 Gunadarma University http://www.gunadarma.ac.id Key Word: Childhood crisis, comparison, novel ABSTRACT : Charles Dickens is one of the greatest English writers in Victorian Era; he was born near Portsmouth in the south of England on 7th February 1812. In 1833, Charles Dickens started writing stories. He became very famous and very rich. Oliver Twist, the story of poor boy without family was published in 1838. other famous book by Charles Dickens are: A Christmas Carol (1843), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), great Expectations (1861) and Our Mutual Friend (1864). Dickens knew how the poor people lived in England. Many of his stories are about poor people, such as David Copperfield and Oliver Twist which become the research. Charles Dickens died on 9th June 1870; Dickens was buried in famous church, Westminster Abbey, In London. The aims of this study or the objectives of this research are to find out the childhood crisis of David Copperfield and Oliver Twist, to find out the relationship between social culture and law in Victorian Age to childhood crisis and also to find out the similarities and differences of childhood crisis between David Copperfield and Oliver Twist. This research uses a qualitative and descriptive method. The source of the data used in this research is the Charles Dickens novels David Copperfield and Oliver Twist. Qualitative research resulting inventions that cant reached out by using statically procedures or other quantifications way. This is because a qualitative research examines peoples life, history organization, functional, social movement or kinship relation and descriptive data such as written words or verbal expression. From this paper we knew how childhood crisis could happen to a person in this case David Copperfield and Oliver Twist from the analysis also describe that the situation of social culture and law in Victorian Age influenced attitude or character someone, how far the crisis could happen, and there are similarities and differences childhood crisis between them and how each this main characters in facing the crisis in young age..
