The second-generation model was launched in 2010 and received a substantial engineering, specification and technology update in 2015 – reinforcing its position as one of the most capable and comfortable large MPVs in the sector. Versatility has always been at the heart of Sharan design, and the current model showcases Volkswagen’s intelligent thinking and famed attention to detail. Key features include seven seats with EasyFold seating concept as standard and twin side sliding doors. All five rear seats can either be folded flat or stowed under the floor, providing a huge number of configurations to owners. And with load volumes ranging from 300 to 2,297 litres, the Sharan is the perfect accessory to modern family life. The 2016 Sharan also introduces a host of safety and driver assistance systems – further boosting its credentials as the perfect family car. Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Bluetooth phone connection and three-zone Climatronic air conditioning are standard across the Sharan range, while advanced features including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Assist with City Emergency Braking are available on certain grades and as options. And for those looking to take the hassle out of urban parking manouvres, Volkswagen’s acclaimed Park Assist is available as an option. Sharan passengers also benefit from Volkswagen’s latest latest-generation touchscreen MIB infotainment systems with smartphone integration. All models in the range are equipped with touchscreen systems as standard, with SE Nav and SEL models equipped with Discover Navigation system as standard. Passengers can also integrate their smartphones into the new infotainment systems. Thanks to an optional Car-Net ‘App Connect’ system, owners of Apple and Android handsets can enjoy full integration through CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink interfaces. The Sharan features a range of advanced drivetrains, with four engines – one petrol and three diesels – available, alongside the option of a six-speed DSG on most models. Power outputs range from 115 to 184 PS, with all four delivering lower emissions and improved fuel economy over the units previously offered. The entry-level engine is a 2.0-litre TDI with 115 PS that is available in S trim only. Moving up the range customers have the choice of a 1.4-litre TSI and a 2.0-litre TDI – both with 150 PS – while at the top is a 2.0-litre TDI with 184 PS. The latter is equipped with an XDS electronic differential as standard. Reinforcing Volkswagen’s commitment to producing economical vehicles, all Sharans are designated BlueMotion Technology models and feature Start/Stop and Brake energy recuperation systems as standard. The design of the Sharan follows the latest Volkswagen ‘design DNA’. It incorporates a familiar ‘face’ with powerful horizontal lines and neatly integrated headlamps that accentuate its generous width. The sculpted sides and gently flared wheel arches help deliver a smooth look while the near rear end – incorporating LED tail lights as standard – is equally distinctive. Four trim levels are offered in the UK: S, SE, SE Navigation and SEL. All four enjoy high levels of specification along with a range of new interior upholsteries and steering wheel designs introduced as part of the 2015 update package. The Sharan is built, like the previous generations, at the Volkswagen Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, Portugal alongside the Scirocco and Eos. In 2015, Volkswagen UK sold 3,325 units. 2 PRESS INFORMATION SHARAN Sharan at a glance Unveiled at Geneva Motor Show in March 2015, 20 years after the original made its debut in 1995. Autoeuropa represents the biggest foreign industrial investment in Portugal and is one of the most modern car production units in Europe. The plant covers a total area of 2,000,000 square metres, of which 1,100,000 sq m are dedicated to production, and the remaining 900,000 sq m to the nearby industrial park. Over 700 suppliers provide parts to Volkswagen Autoeuropa, using the ‘just in time’ production philosophy. The plant produces around 400 vehicles per day. The Autoeuropa plant was founded in 1991, as a 50/50 joint venture agreement between Ford and Volkswagen. Production then began in 1995 of the Volkswagen Sharan, Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra. In 1999, Volkswagen assumed full ownership of the plant. By 2003, the factory had produced one million MPVs. 5 PRESS INFORMATION SHARAN Design Matching form with function has always been a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s design philosophy. With a history of building family-friendly seven-seaters that extends back to the very first camper vans of the early 1950s, Volkswagen’s knowledge and pedigree is unrivalled. As a result, the Sharan showcases Volkswagen’s passion for design and ingenuity - both inside and out. Exterior Fully integrating Volkswagen ‘design-DNA’ matrix, the Sharan’s exterior styling is defined by clear, horizontal lines, and flowing surfaces that are both striking yet elegant. At the front, the dual headlights incorporated into the V-contour of the bonnet are subdivided into a larger area with dipped and main beam lights and a narrow lower section with daytime running and indicator lights. The chrome-plated masking plates guide the horizontal lines of the front end into the headlights and give the Sharan a more concise overall appearance. On models equipped with optional bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running and position lights are included within the headlamp module. It is made up of 15 individual LEDs arranged to form a distinctive ‘light signature’ within the module. The bi-xenon headlights are also equipped with dynamic cornering lights and a motorway function that automatically activates the lights at speeds above around 70 mph. At the back, the Sharan’s rear look is just as clearly structured as that of the front. The dominant visual elements are the concise roof-edge spoiler, the deep tailgate (sill height: 0.67 m) and large rear lights which incorporate LED technology.
