WEDNESDAY ELECTIVES 2019/2020 – SESSION 2 Session Dates: November 6, November 13, November 20, December 4, December 11, December 18 PARKOUR - FEE $135 Join instructors at MoveFree Academy in Redmond for this fun and active Parkour class. Parkour is the functional art of movement, characterized by efficient use of power, speed, agility, spatial awareness, balance, reflexes, and thinking in the moment in order to overcome obstacles within one's environment. Parkour incorporates running, climbing, jumping and swinging. The instructors work with students at their level and comfort and assist them in developing appropriate, achievable goals. Class runs 11:00-12:15 CARPOOL DRIVERS and CLASS CHAPERONES NEEDED. YOGA - FEE $60 Get your body moving and relaxed with yoga! Classes will help you strengthen muscles, become more flexible, and relax in the middle of the busy week. Classes will include fun music, yoga flows, breathing exercises and occasional partner stretches. Never done yoga? No problem! Yoga is a non-competitive activity and focuses on different poses to help quiet the mind and reduce stress. Yoga is a way to explore your individuality and add movement to your body. Class taught by Lilia Karimi at EAS. Lilia Karimi is an adventurer, yoga teacher, and entrepreneur. Lilia has been practicing yoga for ten years and is a proponent of spending more time in nature. She is a Cornell graduate and avid hiker, having summited Mount Rainier and Mount Kilimanjaro. Lilia is the author of the children's yoga book, "Lily Finds Her Own Way: A Child's Introduction to Yoga." BASKETBALL - FEE $90 Build skills and confidence for success both on and off the court at Home Court in Woodinville. Staff coaches will lead players through a variety of drills to help players improve their individual fundamentals and basketball I.Q. Players of all abilities are welcome as the instruction will be catered to challenge players appropriately to maximize the potential for development. Individual skills like; ball handling, shooting form, scoring moves and footwork as well game concepts like defensive positioning and offensive movement will be taught. Sessions will combine skill development drills, competitions and scrimmages to make the sessions fun and productive. Class runs 11:00 -12:30. CARPOOL DRIVERS and CLASS CHAPERONES NEEDED ART - FEE $150 Class taught at Redmond Art Works. CARPOOL DRIVERS NEEDED NINJA/TRAMPOLINE - FEE $45 In this part ninja, part trampoline class you will have the opportunity to experience two elective favorites. You will learn trampoline basics, movement and exercises. Then you can train like a ninja on the obstacle course, climbing wall, peg wall, rope climb, salmon ladder and more! Students will spend the first 30 minutes in quiet study at EAS. All students should be prepared to read or study for 30 minutes. Class held at Northwest Aerials from 11:30-12:30. CARPOOL DRIVERS and CLASS CHAPERONE NEEDED DIGITAL SHORTS FILMAKING - FEE $175 Learning how to produce short films, vlogs, music videos, and other "Digital Shorts". This open ended program allows young filmmakers to think outside the box. Digital shorts are designed to be shared on social media and can range from comedy to infotainment, the avant-garde and beyond. Great opportunity for both beginners and those who have some experience in filmmaking. Class taught by instructors from Cherry Street Films. Cherry Street Films prides themselves in being a mobile media education organization that teaches Filmmaking and Digital Storytelling to youth throughout the Northwest. Students who complete their programs leave with a feeling of confidence and empowerment. They help students find their own voice by teaching them the skills to produce digital media they can be proud of. All gear and equipment needed to film and edit projects in class is provided. BRAIDING AND BRACELETS - FEE $10 In this braiding elective you'll be learning how to braid hair in different styles. You will learn 3 strand, 4+ strand, Fishtail, Dutch, French, and Waterfall braids. You'll also be learning how to make simple bracelets like stripes, chevron, fishtail, jaw and beaded. There will be barrettes and pins galore to explore your creativity with the hairstyles. Class led by EAS 8th grader, Nihira Cherukuri. CLASS HELD AT EAS, CHAPERONE NEEDED. COMPUTER GAME WORKSHOP - FEE $105 In this class, you will learn to create a maze game from the ground up. We will use a professional game development tool,Unity (https://unity.com). You will be asked to use a programing language called C#. Don't worry if you are an absolute beginner to programming! We will start with the very basics and work our way up. If you are interested in game development, programming, or just like working on computers, this class is for you! Instructor: Kunitake Aoki is an industry veteran since 1987. He has worked on more than 30 games that include [Sonic] series at Sega and [Mario vs. Donkey Kong] series at Nintendo. CLASS TAUGHT AT EAS LEARN TO COOK ITALIAN AND GREEK- FEE $75 Have you ever wanted to learn how to make amazing Greek and Italian dishes? Come join EAS parents, Kristi Mallios and Silvia Bajardi in their kitchens as you create dishes like Pastitsio, Pasta al forno and more. At the end of each class you will get to enjoy the warm meal you prepared. Opa! NOTE: Dishes will include gluten, dairy and meat, no nuts. Instructors cannot accommodate dietary restrictions. Class limited to 12 students. CARPOOL DRIVERS NEEDED CIRCUS ARTS AND ACROBATICS - FEE $90 Ever wanted to try circus but not sure where to start? This class will give you a variety of circus skills while you learn the basics of all of the equipment and all of the body positions you will need to build and progress to success. Included are trampoline, tumble track, tumbling, trapeze, rope, tight wire, rolling globe, juggling, aerial skills, and strength and flexibility. Students develop physical skills, increase confidence, and build self-esteem while having fun. Class held at Seattle's School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA). SANCA offers experiences that are physically challenging, socially enriching, and teach physical literacy to people of all ages. For more information see www.sancaseattle.org. DRIVING REQUIRED: Due to the distance of this elective, it is required that if your students is signing up for this elective you can drive at least 1 of the 6 weeks and indicate driving availability below. Class runs from 11:15-12:30. MAGIC THE GATHERING & BOARD GAMES - FEE $50 Come join the Magic card game craze. Magic the Gathering is a card game where you build your collection of cards by trading with your friends, assembling decks of cards, and battling against an opponent and their deck. This class is suited for those who have never played but want to learn as well as the more advanced player. Cards will be available to those who do not have their own. Not into Magic but enjoy strategy board games? Then this elective is for you too. Each week there will be a variety of board games available to learn and play. Class taught by Eric Battisti of Tolarian Scholars Northwest. Eric has taught several enrichment classes at EAS as well as other afterschool programs. Eric is a Magic the Gathering expert as well as provides a variety of new and fun board games for students. NO CARPOOLS REQUIRED BLACKSMITHING AT PRATT FINE ARTS CENTER – FEE $195 A popular elective, blacksmithing, or forging, is about transforming and shaping cold hard steel through the use of heat. Using basic techniques such as hammering, twisting, tapers, bends, and splits, students will have the opportunity to create sculptural and functional objects. This unique elective is a great opportunity to learn something new in a great location. Class takes place at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. All materials are included. ** NOTE: STUDENTS MUST BE 12 OR 13 YEARS OF AGE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS ELECTIVE.
