The Inner Course contingency is therefore a plan against potential abandonment and the intention is to use the Outer Course where possible. * all timings subject to change *All timings subject to change PAGE 04 QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS DAY MEDIA GUIDE 1:25PM QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP (GROUP 2) Total prize money £500,000 Prize money breakdown: 1st: £283,550 - 2nd: £107,500 3rd: £53,800 - 4th: £26,800 - 5th: £13,450 - 6th: £6,750 • 2m (3200m) Round Course | 3yo+ | No Penalties | Maximum Field 20 • Next deadline is the second entry stage on Tuesday 2nd October • Supplementary Entries (£35,000) close by noon on Monday 15th October • Declare 10am Thursday 18th October LAST YEAR’S WINNER: ORDER OF ST GEORGE Order Of St George pulled off an unlikely-looking second victory in the race, having looked held when fourth and seemingly toiling two furlongs out. At that point, the Jessica Harrington-trained Torcedor had kicked clear, but the leader suddenly began to tire close home, allowing his pursuers to sweep past with Ryan Moore’s mount just getting home. “We all know what a talented horse he is, but he is a little bit funny,” said part-owner Michael Tabor. “To be honest, I thought he was beaten and briefly turned away from watching, but Ryan has really galvanised him.” POSSIBLE CONTENDERS THIS YEAR INCLUDE ORDER OF ST GEORGE Will he be back to bid for a second success in this race? Defeat in the Gold Cup at Ascot in June showed that the six-year-old still can’t be fully relied upon to give his best on every occasion, but he has seemed to come alive in the latter stages of the season before and if any trainer can get him firing on all cylinders again, it’s the amazing Aidan O’Brien. The winner of more than half of his 25 career appearances, his prize money earnings are on the cusp of reaching £2million. STRADIVARIUS Only third in this race last year, weeks after occupying the same placing in the Ladbrokes St Leger, trainer John Gosden was adamant after the race that the best would still be to come this year. So it has proved with an impressive success in the MansionBet Yorkshire Cup on his first start of 2018 followed by a battling victory in the Gold Cup at Ascot and questions about his stamina for the marathon two-and-a-half-mile test being answered emphatically. Most recently he struck again in the Qatar Goodwood Cup to put himself in line for the Weatherbys Hamilton £1million bonus. TORCEDOR Looked to have this race in the bag at the furlong-pole 12 months ago, only to falter sufficiently in the final strides to end up out of the placings. However, he put memories of a disastrous trip to Dubai behind him when scoring in style at Ascot in May and once again showed his liking for the track when third behind Stradivarius in the Gold Cup the following month. Positive tactics may appear to make him vulnerable close home, but they also undoubtedly bring out in the best in this very likeable performer and he again went down with all guns blazing at Goodwood on his latest start.
