Issue No. 7 May to July 2014 Welcome to the seventh edition of the Newark and Southwell Deanery Newsletter. Dear All, This June I will be standing down as your Lay Chair of Deanery Synod, having been in post for six years. Prior to this I was joint Lay Chair of the newly formed Newark and Southwell Deanery and before that was Lay Chair of Southwell Deanery for six years. As far as my youngest daughter, who is now 18, is concerned, I have always been a Lay chair! In that time many things have changed. The diocese changed its name in 2005, from the Diocese of Southwell to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Three Diocesan Bishops have come and gone and the role of the Deanery and Deanery Leadership team within the diocesan structure has become more involved. As an administrative structure we have been given more responsibility for the day to day running of the deanery, involving allocation of share across the parishes and planning of deanery structure and staffing through various targets set by the diocese - 2012 and 2020. The journey has not been easy. There are some things that have worked better than others. By listening to what folks have to say, both the good and the bad, we hope we are able to serve the deanery more effectively. Money and share and the enormous responsibility of the upkeep of our glorious parish churches has always been and will remain an ongoing juggling act between the needs of our parishes and the desire to join together in the Transforming Mission of God in the wider diocese and beyond. I have been astounded at the huge amount of hard work that goes on, quietly, in the background and without adequate recognition. I would like to say that every single one of you deserves a medal and you have my complete admiration. I know how hard it can be to maintain a clean, welcoming church with fewer and fewer volunteers but I also know the amazing thrill and uplift when people come to your church and appreciate the work you have done and the welcome that you give. In my time as Lay Chair I have learnt much and met many new people. I haven’t managed to get to every corner of the deanery – there doesn’t seem to have been enough time. I have gone from Lay Chair of a small deanery with 21 parishes to that of a deanery the size of Jersey with 72 parishes. Sundays, when I am not in my own church, have become a true Holy day when I have had the privilege to travel to different churches and experience different worship styles. My faith has grown during this time and the welcomes I have received have never failed to amaze me. To all those people I have not yet had the chance to meet I pray that the opportunity will arise in the future. I am looking forward to taking part in the future journey with a new Lay Chair and leadership team after the Synod elections in June and pray that our deanery will continue to go from strength to strength as we continue our life together in Christ. Mrs Penny Peterson Lay Chair http://southwell.anglican.org/about-us/deaneries/newark-southwell-deanery-home/ From Holy Trinity, Southwell I am married to Cathy (who is also Ordained) and we have three children, Bethany who is 12 years-old, Asher who is 10 years-old and Talitha who is 3 years-old. Cathy and I have spent the last 9 years serving in inner City Liverpool working together with 2 churches which joined with 2 others to become the mission focused, mixed economy Parish of All Saints Liverpool. I became a Christian at 19 whilst at University in Bristol and served as a Careforce worker in Essex before following a career in research and project management with the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, (with a year out to train as a secondary maths teacher). Over the years I have been heavily involved in CPAS CYFA ventures and then as an Overall leader of CPAS Falcon Camps for a number of years. I have also served both as a CPV (CYFA Pathfinder Ventures) Trustee and as a CPAS Trustee. Both Cathy and I are part of the New Wine Leaders network. One of my greatest passions is to see people come to know God and experience him in ways other than traditional church. I love to cook (and eat!), and I am hoping to rediscover my love for swimming (to help counteract the eating). We have just taken delivery of 5 chickens and we are looking forward to them starting to lay!. Any spare time is taken up with reading, sci-fi and gadgets. I met Cathy in Malvern, Worcestershire, when she was serving a year with Careforce based in Malvern Priory, after her time at Edge Hill College near Liverpool. Cathy went to Bristol a year ahead of me to begin training as a Baptist Minister. She left Bristol married to an Anglican Curate and expecting Bethany, the beginning of her journey to Anglican ordination. Cathy was SSM curate in All Saints Liverpool, and is very much looking forward to discerning her part in the mission and ministry here in Southwell. Cathy has a passion for those on the fringes of Church and Society to meet with Jesus and has been involved in a number of “Fresh Expressions of Worship” in Liverpool. Cathy loves all things crafty and in particular crochet, knitting and upcycling. Over the years Cathy has been interested in family history and has been working on her family tree, discovering that she had ancestors that had lived in our Parish in Liverpool, what will she discover in Southwell? With 3 children the words “spare time” do not often come into her vocabulary!
