Odds & Ends Musings, helpful hints, book reviews and more from Adult Services Librarian, Meg Treseder As librarians, we are constantly asked the questions, “What should I read?” and “Have you read anything good lately?” That’s actually one of my favorite parts of my job, but as someone who reads a lot, I find myself forgetting books I may have read a month ago. If you’re like me and you’ve been looking for a really simple way to better remember what you read and how you felt about it, I want to recommend Goodreads to you. Goodreads is a website that allows you to keep track of the books you read. As you read or hear about books you want to read, you can add them to your own virtual library by placing them on specific bookshelves, which you can personalize. After you finish a book, you can add it to your “read shelf,” and at the same time, you have the option to rate the book (1 to 5 star rating system), write a personal review, and include the date you started and finished the book. This is one of the most powerful aspects of Goodreads. You’ll be better able to remember books you’ve read, and you can instantly add books that you want to read as soon as you hear about them because it’s accessible from your smartphone and tablet. It’s your own mobile library! There is a very strong and active community of readers on Goodreads. As you set up your account, you can begin to “friend” people. You have the option of finding your Facebook friends on Goodreads, or you can find friends by searching for them. Because you can see other people’s book reviews, you have the ability to make friends with people who like the same kinds of books that you do, making them a valuable resource when you’re looking for your next book to read. So, how do you set up an account? It’s easy! Just go to www.goodreads.com and under “New Here?” enter your name, email address, and choose a password. Click “Sign Up.” You can now start searching for books you want to add to your library and begin looking for your friends.
