Our concept was based on serving fresh brewed beer with quality and creative food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. When we opened, brewpubs were expanding throughout the country. Since then, the brewpub concept has slowed, but not Big Bear. We like to think of our very loyal guests as family, and after 21 years that family continues to grow. We have a strong foundation in this community and are very proud of that achievement. Behind the scenes of any successful restaurant is a devoted staff... we have many who have been with us since the beginning. Consistency breeds success and for that we thank our crew. A BRIEF HISTORY OF CORAL SPRINGS, FLORIDA A gentleman by the name Henry “Bud” Lyons obtained a vast amount of land between 1911 and 1939 that totaled over 20,000 acres. Although the land consisted of marshy wilderness, Lyons teamed with workers from the Bahamas, cleared and drained the land and used it to grow beans. This earned Lyons the nickname “Titan of the Bean Patch.” In 1952, Lyons passed away and left his large land holdings to his family. Lyon’s family brought in a head of 5,000 cattle and converted the land to be used for ranching. Even though the land owned by the Lyons family was still slightly swampy, it was a perfect match for Hunt’s vision for a master-planned community. Hunt’s development firm incorporated the area as a City under Florida law. The City of Coral Springs was chartered on July 10, 1963. The development firm purchased more acres from the Lyons family and brought the total land in the City up to 5,000 acres. The City of Coral Springs put a master plan into effect that projected a population of more than 50,000 residents. Johnny Carson was brought into the area in May of 1965 to help bring in buyers at a land sale held in Coral Springs. Carson himself bought nearly 55 acres of land in the area. Almost 1,100 lots of land were sold at this time and the first residents began moving into the area. 1965 was a big year for the City of Coral Springs: residents were moving in and the City hired its first employee, Police Chief Richard Vedilago and his German Shepherd named “Sergeant Satan.” The official population at the time of his hiring was only 10 residents. However, Vedilago and his sidekick patrolled the area, coming across more snakes and alligators than actual people. The staff at Big Bear Brewing Company welcomes you to Coral Springs, Florida, and we hope you enjoy your stay. 1 ON TAP HANDCRAFTED BEERS BREWED IN HOUSE DAILY POLAR LIGHT ~ 4.9% ABV, 11 IBU’s US Open Beer Championship: 2011 (B), 2012 (S) Best FL Beer Championship: 2002 (B), 2004 (S), 2008 (S), 2009 (G) Our lightest beer, inspired by the golden ales traditionally brewed in Northern Germany.
