Well, in short, it is a politico-newsmagazine that puts the Establishment up for examination - both satirically and seriously. To wax satiric for example, Descartes once said: "I think, therefore, I am." The magazine's response to Descartes would be, "However, if I think not, am I not? No, I must be an American." But, on a serious level, The Global Village Project believes that if one, let's say, objects conscieritiously with American foreign policy, it does not mean that one is anti-American. It simply means that he or she objects conscientiously, on legal or moral grounds, with American foreign policy. In presenting its views (and the views offered to it) the Project does not censor an issue's position despite its controversy, sensitivity and/or political correctness. Moreover, The Global Village Project believes if we all take care of things locally, then globally, everything and everyplace else will take care of itself - as long as we s someplace. This message is similar to what Goethe (Faust) once said, "Let everyone sweep in front of his o n door, and the whole world will be clean." The Global Village Project will attempt to offer its readers an uninsulated and unsolicited (no special-interest groups) source of inforMation not delivered presently by today's mainstream media. We can accomplish this because we have no advertisers to decide what is or is not in good taste. This "decision-making" done by advertisers poses a conflict of interest, in that advertisers essentially control the open forum. For example, the television series LouGiont was cancelled by CBS in 1982, allegedly because of series star Edward Asner's vocal politics criticising Am rican involvement in Central America. The show's advertisers pulled out, citing a conflict of interest. B, the same token, Ms Magazine became insolvent at one point for representing the feminist viewpoint. It women's cosmetics advertisers pulled their contracts with the magazine, citing their reason as a "conflict o interest." Within the pages of th s magazine there will be, beyond any reasonable doubt, conflict of interests, but we guarantee equal space for rebuttal. The Global Village Project subscribes to the idea that an individual's conscience deals with i eas and that law deals with actions. That is, if one can think it, one can say it. But, 'just because one has s id it, it doesn't mean one can act upon it or incite others to act. Nor does it mean that everyone will like the idea being presented. Censorship is an individual responsibility. If we allow the expurgation of unpopu ar ideas, ideas that are at the very edge of thought and minority v ews, we are then primarily saying that we are willing to accept a Orwellian form of thought-control and an one-sidedness in our th nking. Thereby, we lose free thought and, become subjugated t , or enslaved by, if you please, the mainstream dogma, w atever it may be at whatever time. You know, like that guy amed Galileo. Censorship, like cancer, grows. The therapy, i Olt the cure, is . to have balance! To have balance, both I pular and unpopular ideas require equal exposure and analysis. Impossible? Perhaps. But, if we are to know how an individ al or a society feels, the media operators must not dictate to ciety and then ask of it what it thinks. Instead, media should be a sounding-board that assimilates the ideas of the society it supposedly serves, so that media reflects societal thinking and of the reverse. The former represents a controlled society and the latter an open one. The "thoughts of the many" must be wei hed as favourably as the limiting and self- serving sphere of infl ence of the few, especially if the idea of diversity in a free .ciety is to mean something. It is a monumental undertaking - but necessary when considering the alternatives. the GLOBAL VILLA E project 3 The Global Village Pr 'ect focuses on: political assassinations; social and political articles/essays; political caricatures; global issu s, both political and environmental; opinions and editorials; surveys; the occasional political poem like the ne below, written by the poet Robert Burns: Ye by crites! Are these your pranks? To murder men, and give God thanks? Desist for Shame! Proceed no further: God won't accept your thanks for murder. Hopefully, by example The Global Village Project can demonstrate that it has no preoccupation with any person's occupation, stntus, race, religion, and station in life. The Global Village Project's only criterion for writers planning to sub it a piece of writing is that your writing present an element of conflict. Whatever the conflict may be - e.g., om or Dad won't give you the keys to the car - we would like to hear from you. We welcome and encourag novice writers, young students, and voices of dissent. A genuine dissident dissents genuinely. And loudly early and often. Our first edition of Th Global Village Project is in limited print of only one thousand issues (or less) and is a collectors' edition. In this issue we mark the thirtieth year of American President Johri$itzgerald Kennedy's assassination. The Ke nedy article's focus is to review the 1960's assassination evidence, present the many conspiracy theories ad anted over the years, and analyse the discrepancies of evidence. The Global Village Pr ect may very well be a one-time deal. Therefore, on behalf of the Project, I welcome your ideas and support cause, like public television, The Global Village Project's survival will depend solely on the public support i receives. Our destiny is in your hands. FP-ank Kontos EDITOR'S NOTE I would like to begin by thanking Frank Kontos, the publisher/editor of the Global Village Project for allowing me the privilege of working as Syntax Editor on this Project.
