SEMESTER: 4TH LEVEL: DIPLOMA PREPARED BY: RAJKISHOR, LECTURER (CIVIL ENGG) Track Junction The arrangement which is made for transferring a train from one track to the other, is called Track Junction. This is generally of following types: • Cross Over • Scissor Cross • Diagonal Crossing • Triangular Crossing Check Rail Stretcher Bar Layout of Cross Over Layout of Scissor Cross or Acute Crossing Layout of Diamond Crossing or Obtuse Crossing Layout of Triangular Crossing Railway Station A railway station is a railway facility or area where trains regularly stop to load or unload passengers or freight or both. It generally consists of at least one track-side platform and a station building providing such ancillary services as ticket sales, waiting rooms and baggage/ freight service. Stations may be at ground level, underground or elevated. Factors affecting selection of site for railway station are: • It should be at affordable distance from the localities. • It should have proper approach road connecting nearby areas. • Fairly level ground is preferred. • Sufficient land availability for future expansion and development. Requirement of Railway Station • The arrangement for controlling the movement of trains by signal. • Sufficient space available for receiving, sorting and dispatching the trains. • Sufficient no. of platform for passengers and handling goods. • Arrangement for inspection and maintenance of tracks • Water columns • Easy and comfortable approach roads • Waitting halls and retiring rooms. • Guide map of city for separate arrival and departure of trains. • Booking office for issuing tickets and for goods. • Name board of the station. • Staffroom • Arrangement of drinking water, WCs and bathroom. • Suitable light arrangement. • An enquiry office • Security guard room. Type of Railway Station Railway stations are classified under three categories: • Way-side Station: These type of stations are located on running lines. These allow faster train to overtake a slower train. For this, loop line and siding are provided. Way-side stations are of three types- Halt Station, Flag Station & Cross Station. Way-Side Station in Single Line • Junction Station: In this type of stations, lines from three or more directions meet. The junction has minimum of one main line & one branch line. • Terminal Station: The dead end of incoming track or the station at which railway line ends or terminate, is called terminal station. Junction Station Terminal Station Station Yards • Station yards: It is a place on the track where train stops for clearing passengers and goods traffic. • Types of Station yards: 1. Passenger bogie yard 2. Goods Yard 3. Locomotive Yard 4. Marshalling Yard • Passenger Bogie Yard: The main objectives of this yard are- . To provide safe movement of passengers. To provide facilities like banking, enquiry, waiting place for passengers etc. • Goods Yard: The goods yard facilitates the receiving, loading, unloading, delivery of goods. • Locomotive Yard: The yard where all facilities of maintenance like cooling, watering, repairing, oiling, cleaning etc. are provided for locomotive are called locomotive yard. • Requirement of Locomotive Yard: .
