Page 2 Getting Started The Torrance Unified School District consists of 17 elemen- tary, 8 middle, 4 high schools, 1 continuation and 1 alterna- tive high school. The District also has 3 adult school campus- es. TUSD was established in 1947 and unified in 1948. Nestled in the heart of the South Bay, we are bordered by the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the beach cities and cities of Lawndale and Hawthorne. The District serves most of the City of Torrance and is governed by five school board members. Welcome to Torrance Unified. Our mission is to provide an all-inclusive family center that facilitates the enrollment process and offers additional support resources dedicated to serve the families and schools of the Torrance Unified School District. Family Welcome Enrollment Center The Center is open year round, including summer months, and we do not close for lunch. Check with library for when/where Homework Helpers are scheduled. Textbooks: TUSD Textbooks for language arts, math, science and social studies for grades 4-8 are available. Other textbooks may be available. Library Resources: Resources for homework and research. CQ Researcher online is an excellent source for issues shaping our world. School Supplies: Homework Center has limited quantities of common supplies needed to complete assignments. Online Resources The library subscribes to a variety of online databases that are accessible from the Library or from home 24/7. All you need is your Torrance Library Card. Page 6 Childcare/Preschool Childcare Resource Network Resource and referral agencies and programs (R&Rs), funded by the Cali- fornia Department of Education, Child Development Division (CDE/CDD), are located in every county in the state. The network can provide free help in finding free/low-cost/full cost child care, tips on finding child care that works for your family, access to TrustLine: California's Background Check for In-Home Child Care. Parents can also get involved in advocating for quality, affordable child care in California – through Parent Voices or Child Care Aware - national child care information and advocacy group for par- ents. There is a resource network for each area in California. If you have any trouble locating the child care information you need, please contact us by phone on our toll-free Consumer Education line at 1.800.543.7793. They are child care experts in the Westside and South Bay. They guide families towards quality services and programs. Connections For Children helps over 3,500 families each year to find quality child care regardless of income. Connections For Children offers many resources online so you can obtain information from the comfort of your home. Of course, it’s sometimes still necessary to come see us in person and we appreciate your visit. Page 7 Childcare/Preschool Connections For Children offers referrals to licensed child care programs in the Westside and South Bay communities of Los Angeles, including Santa Monica, Culver City, the Beach Cities, Torrance, and Lomita. The map below shows the com- munities we serve. There are three ways to search for child care: 1. Use the online search. 2. Call Connections For Children and speak with a Resource & Referral Counselor at (310) 452-3325. 3. Visit offices. All licensed child care providers in our service area have been invited to list their facilities here, however some providers have elected not to participate. Connections For Children con- tinuously updates the information provided here. The data- base is powered by NACCRRAware®. Note: As a parent, you have the right to get information about any substantiated or inconclusive complaints about a child care provider that you select for your child. That information is public and you can get it by calling the local licensing office. The telephone num- ber for the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing is (424) 301-3077.
