Congratulations to the U17 girls who took home the flag in their grand final! We do have to ask why we didn’t get more teams in finals, given the pedigree of many of our players. I think there are a number of reasons for this but one big one reason in the senior ranks was a lack of availability of players wanting to play regular two day cricket. It is not ideal to be going cap-in-hand to anyone we know of who might fancy a game of cricket at the weekend, just so we don’t have to forfeit the game! We ought to be having competition for places in teams. In hindsight, the senior mens did not have enough players to run 6 teams. However, at the start of the season, it seemed by the responses to player’s intentions that 6 teams might be viable. Perhaps next season we ought to be more conservative in our estimates of player availability. From a senior men’s perspective, I also think we need to decide what sort of club we want to be – do we want to be a Community Cricket Club for everyone where enjoyment of each other’s company is the most important aspect of playing and being involved in the Club, with match success not so important? Or do we want to have a 1st grade Suburban Turf side, capable of winning the first grade flag, and to be a club capable of winning the Club Championship as we did a few years ago? If we decide we want to become a Champion club on the field, then we certainly need to change the intensity with which we going about things – not only at training but also in our player recruitment, and in our mental preparation for the games. On a more positive note, we had a pretty healthy season financially, mainly due to an increase in the grants and donations that we have received from various organizations this year. Once again, we were very grateful to our loyal band of sponsors: Scarborough Toyota, Sports Specialists, Floreat Physio, Event Cinemas, MKT Tax, Price Advertising for their continued support to the Club. On the social side of things, the season was very enjoyable. Amongst several events during the year, two highlights were another very successful Quiz Night and the Celebrity speakers evening where we were also entertained all night by Geoff Lawson & Bruce Yardley. Both of these events also raised good funds for our Club. Many thanks to the Executive Committee this season– Col Haughton, Sue Volaric, Dale Ballantyne, Dee Appleby, Avril Fahey/Kate Burns and John Lucas, and also many thanks to all the captains of teams this year –your input and direction this season has been greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all the coaches and managers of the Junior teams for their time and effort in making junior cricket a well organised and enjoyable experience this year. Special mention should go to a club member who received National Honours this year– Gemma Triscari, who was picked in the Australian Shooting Star Squad for their tour to New Zealand. Also congratulations go to all the Club members who represented WA in the Western Fury this past season– Avril Fahey, Nicole Bolton, Kate Burns, Emma King, Gemma Triscari, Ash Endersbee. Special mention also to Avril Fahey, who played her 150th game for Western Fury in November, making her one of the longest serving cricketers in WA, and the longest serving female cricketer in WA. Well done Avril I am stepping down as President for this coming season, having had two very enjoyable years at the helm. I wish the new president, Col Haughton, and the new Exec committee all the best for the season. Let’s remember the Spirit, Mateship, Character and Commitment that exists at our Club and build on these virtues in everything that we do around the Club next season and in seasons to come.
