2018 APOSTOLIC PRAISE CHORUSBOOK Richard W. Smith

2018 APOSTOLIC PRAISE CHORUSBOOK The 2018 Apostolic Praise© Chorusbook combines a unique compilation of 130 choruses, written chiefly for those who have gone through the Apostolic Praise© series who wish to enlarge their repertoire of songs. It contains a wide variety of songs, from old standards such as “Wonderful Peace” to Gospel choruses such as “Saved” “Power” and “Breakthrough” to more contemporary songs such as “Jesus Messiah.” However, what makes this chorusbook different is the fact that the songs are not written with just the basic, easy, boring chords, as most lead sheets are. Instead, the songs have been totally rewritten with advanced, fullsounding chords, giving the musician that plays them a very professional sound. When the musician plays “O I Want To See Him” the Apostolic Praise© way, it won’t be with just the simple IIVV chords. Instead, it is going to have a variety of complex, beautifulsounding chords that will make the song sound more modern. Also included are some resources on how to transpose songs to different keys, as well as an explanation page for some of the unique symbols that this chorusbook uses. Richard W. Smith Apostolic Prais e How To Transpose Songs To Different Keys Imagine that you are the main pianist for your church. One day an evangelist comes to your church and you have to play “Amazing Grace” for his wife, who is going to sing a solo that night. Unfortunately, she wants you to play it in the key of Ab and your church always sings it in F. You have thirty minutes before church starts! What do you do? Ok, true, you could cheat and use the modulation function on your keyboard, but let’s imagine that you keyboard doesn’t have one of those. What now? Let me just tell you, the time will come when you will need to know how to transpose a song into a different key. Here is how you do it. Let’s take “Amazing Grace” as an example. Here it is. F Amazing Grace F2 / / Cm9 / F9○ Bbmaj9 / / F2 / A7b9 Dm7 / / G9○ / / C7sus4 / / C7 / / Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, Fmaj9 / / Cm9 / F9○ Bbmaj9 / / F2 / A7b9 Dm7 / / G9○ / C7b9 F2 / / Bb/C / / I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. The first thing we want to do is rewrite the song using Roman Numerals. For example, “F” is the I chord. So in place of “F2” we write I2. “C” is the V chord, so in place of Cm9, we write v9. (Remember, lower case Roman numerals signify minor chords.) Now, we can transpose the song into any key we want. Here is the key of F: F G A Bb C D E F I II III IV V vi vii I Amazing Grace I2 / / v9 / I9○ IVmaj9 / / I2 / III7b9 vi7 / / II9○ / / V7sus4 / / V7 / / Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, Imaj9 / / v9 / I9○ IVmaj9 / / I2 / III7b9 vi7 / / II9○ / V7b9 I2 / / IV/V / / I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. Now let’s transpose it to Ab doing the same thing. In place of I2, we write Ab2, and in place of v9, we write Ebm9. (Or you can just line the scales up and replace each note.) Here is the key of F: F G A Bb C D E F Here is the key of Ab: Ab Bb C Db Eb F G Ab I II III IV V vi vii I Ab Amazing Grace Ab2 / / Ebm9 / Ab9○ Dbmaj9 / / Ab2 / C7b9 Fm7 / / Bb9○ / / Eb7sus4 / / Eb7 / / Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, Abmaj9 / / Ebm9 / Ab9○ Dbmaj9 / / Ab2 / C7b9 Fm7 / / Bb9○ / Eb7b9 Ab2 / / Db/Eb / / I once was lost, but now I’m found, was blind, but now I see. © 2018 Richard W. Smith Apostolic Prais e How To Read an Apostolic Praise Chorusbook This book was written primarily for those who have completed the Apostolic Praise© series, but it can also be used by those who have not. This page is written for those who have not completed the series. Unique Apostolic Praise© symbols ○ = open position chord (where the hand is more “open” when it plays the chord); For ninth chords, this means the chord is in root position. For suspended 2 chords, this means 1s t inversion. Example of 9 in open position: C9 ○ would be EGBbD. Example of 2 in open position: C2 ○ would be DGC (Closed position chords are where the hand is more “closed up” when it plays the chord.) Example of C9 in closed position: BbDEG Example of C2 in closed position: CDG (v) = This stands for “vamp.” It means you are playing passing chords on that chord for 2 measures. The basic passing chord is always the IV chord, so your passing chord on a C chord would be an F chord. C (v) = CFCFCCFCF C7 (v) = CFC7FCCFC7F Cm7 (v) = CmFC7FCmCmFC7F This is explained more indepth in Apostolic Praise 101: A Crash Course in Piano. So if you are unsure how to do this, you need to purchase Apostolic Praise 101. (mv) = This stands for “minor vamp.” This is when you play passing chords on a minor chord for at 2 measures. For example, the passing chord for Cm would be Bb. (CmBbCmBbCmCmBbCmBb) * = This means that you only play the vamp for 1 measure, half of the normal time. C (v)* = CFCF C7 (v)* = CFC7F Cm7 (v)* = CmFC7F Cm (mv)* = CmBbCmBb C / / / = togetherrightrightright. This means play on C for 1 measure of four beats. This is kind of selfexplanatory. It is explained in AP I. [ ] = The chords inside only receive half a beat. Count: 1 2 3 + 4 + 1 2 3 4 1 C / [DmC/EDm/FC/G] C/G / F/G / C © 2018 Richard W.
