You are not your own; you were bought at a Friends, price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies. I always start the new year off talking about getting healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. January is when people make New Year’s resolutions, and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) the #1 resolution is to lose weight. More than likely, our holiday snacking has overloaded us on sugar! I encourage you to come to our weight loss support group, which meets at the Chapel on Monday mornings at 9am. It’s been fun to meet friends and encourage each other in our goals for the week. The most important thing is to feel good, have energy, and help your self-esteem. On a different note, next month we will start signing up for our Spring Trip to Poteet, Texas, the Strawberry Festival, and then to the Riverwalk in San Antonio! We will have details at the dinner in February and in the March newsletter. Our Christmas Home Tour went very well, and we will have the report on the money raised at February’s dinner. We are excited to report that most of the proceeds went to benefit “Communities in Schools” for needy children. I’m sure everyone is resting from the busy holiday season, but try not to miss the things that we have on our calendar. We need you to be active! Everything I have is because of God’s grace and favor. ” Unknown HEALTH TIPS New Study Says You Need to Double Your Daily Fruit and Veggie Intake Remember that old health adage about eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily to remain healthy? According to new research, that’s not nearly enough. A recent study says you have to double those daily amounts — to ten servings a day — to get maximum health benefits. That’s a lot of fruits and vegetables every day, but the stats that the researchers at the Imperial College London present are pretty impressive. They say if you consume 10 portions a day, or 800 grams, it can prevent an estimated 7.8 million premature deaths worldwide. Fruit and vegetables have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and to boost the health of our blood vessels and immune system. This may be due to the complex network of nutrients they hold,” said lead author Dr. Dagfinn Aune. “For instance, they contain many antioxidants, which may reduce DNA damage, and lead to a reduction in cancer risk.” Research found that the big benefits from eating more fruit like apples, pears and oranges, as ellw as vegetables like lettuce, broccoli and cabbage, work particularly well in preventing strokes, heart disease and early death. Reduction in the risk of cancer comes from green and yellow vegetables like spinach, peppers and carrots. “Most likely it is the whole package of beneficial nutrients you obtain by eating fruits and egetablesv that is crucial to health,” he says. “This is why it is important to eat whole plant foods to get the benefit, instead of taking antioxidant or vitamin supplements (which have not been shown to reduce disease risk).” Just like the dietary adage above, the World Health Organization (WHO) does recommend eating five portions or 400 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. But Dr. Aune says if you want a real health upgrade, you need to boost your daily fruit and veggie intake — and he means double your servings. FEATURED MEMBER Paula Portwood Tommy and I met at the Castro County Livestock show. He was from Dimmitt, and I was from Hart. We married after high school on October 17, 1970. Soon afterwards, Tommy was drafted into the Army and served a year in Vietnam. After Tommy returned from Vietnam, we established our home in Dimmitt. I started working at the Dimmitt newspaper, the Castro County News, in 1973. Little did I know I had found my second home for the next 30 years. We took pride in creating the best weekly newspaper we could for our community. I made lifelong friends; I call them my newspaper family. The newspaper sold in 2003, and I was offered the office manager position at Dimmitt Sulfur Products/Poole Chemical where I worked until I retired in 2017. After retirement, we moved to Lubbock. I am thankful for our children, Rochelle, Bryan, and Brent. I could not be prouder of them. I am thankful for our 6 grandchildren: Shelby, Logan, Aiden, Landon, Ethan, and Elizabeth. My fur baby, Gizmo, is always there for me. I am thankful for my husband and grateful to have been married to that fun-loving, crazy man for 48 years. I feel lost. It is hard going on without him, but I have strong support from family and the Lake Ridge Ladies. WORD SEARCH BULLETIN Prayer Chain If you have any prayer requests, we would like to pray for you.
