Neither a sign of anger nor fear remains. Tu vieni frattanto a stringer, mio bene, You come in the meantime to tighten, my dear, Le dolci catene si grate al mio cor. The sweet chains that are pleasing to my heart. Als Luise die Briefe ihres ungetreuen Liebhabers verbrannte, K. 520 .............. W. A. Mozart Abendempfindung, K. 523 (1756-1791) Als Luise die Briefe ihres As Louise Burned the Letter ungetreuen Liebhabers verbrannte of Her Faithless Lover Poem by Gabriele von Baumberg Translation by John Wesley Wright Erzeugt von heisser Phantasie, Produced by hot fantasy, In einer schwärmerischen Stunde In a rapturous hour brought Zur Welt gebrachte - geht zu Grunde, To the world - go to the ground (Die!), Ihr Kinder der Melancholie! You children of melancholy! Ihr danket Flammen euer Sein. You may thank flames for your existence. Ich geb’ euch nun den Flammen wieder, I give you back now to the flames, Und all die schwärmerischen Lieder; And all the rapturous songs; Denn ach! er sang nicht mir allein. For, ah!, he sang not only to me. Ihr brennet nun, und bald, ihr Lieben, You burn now, and soon, love letters, Ist keine Spur von euch mehr hier: There will be no more trace of you here. Doch ach! der Mann, der euch geschrieben, But ah! the man who wrote you, Brennt lange noch vielleicht in mir. Burns long still perhaps in me. Junior Recital Maggie Jones, Mezzo-Soprano Sunday, May 14, 2017 Holloway Hall, Great Hall, 5 p.m. Abendempfindung Evening Sensation Poem by Joachim Heinrich Campe Translation by John Wesley Wright Abend ist's, die Sonne ist verschwunden, It is evening, the sun has disappeared, Und der Mond strahlt Silberglanz; And the moon emits silver rays; So entfliehn des Lebens schönste Stunden, So flee life's fairest hours, Fliehn vorüber wie im Tanz. Flying away as if in a dance. Bald entflieht des Lebens bunte Szene, Soon life's colorful scenes will fly away, Und der Vorhang rollt herab; And the curtain will roll down; Aus ist unser Spiel, des Freundes Träne Our play is over, the tears of a friend Fliesset schon auf unser Grab. Already flow over our grave. Bald vielleicht (mir weht, wie Westwind leise, Soon perhaps (a quiet foreboding blows to me Eine stille Ahnung zu), like a gentle west wind), Schließ ich dieses Lebens Pilgerreise, I will part from this life's pilgrim journey, Fliege in das Land der Ruh. And fly into the land of rest. Werdet ihr dann an meinem Grabe weinen, If you will then weep over my grave, Trauernd meine Asche sehn, Mourning at the sight of my ashes, Dann, o Freunde, will ich euch erscheinen Then, oh friends, I will appear to you Und will Himmel auf euch wehn. And will breathe heaven upon you. Schenk auch du ein Tränchen mir Shed a little tear for me also Und pflücke mir ein Veilchen auf mein Grab, And pluck for me a violet for my grave, Und mit deinem seelenvollen Blicke And with your soulful eyes, Sieh dann sanft auf mich herab. Look then gently down on me. Weih mir eine Träne, und ach! Dedicate a tear to me, and ah! Schäme dich nur nicht, sie mir zu weihn; Do not be ashamed to dedicate it to me; O, sie wird in meinem Diademe Oh, it will be then, the most Dann die schönste Perle sein! Beautiful pearl in my crown! h PROGRAM NOTES Puisqu’ici bas toute âme ......................................................................................
