ECE 586: Vector Space Methods Lecture 22: Projection onto Convex Sets Henry D. Pfister Duke University 5.3: Convexity Convexity is a useful property defined for sets, spaces, and functionals that simplifies analysis and optimization. Definition (convex set) Let V be a vector space over R. The subset A ⊆ V is called a convex set if, for all a1; a2 2 A and λ 2 (0; 1), we have λa1 + (1 − λ)a2 2 A. It is strictly convex if, for all ◦ a1; a2 2 A and λ 2 (0; 1), λa1 + (1 − λ)a2 2 A . Definition (convex function) Let V be a vector space, A ⊆ V be a convex set, and 1 f : V ! R be a functional. The functional f is called convex on A if, for all a1; a2 2 A and λ 2 (0; 1), −1 1 2 f (λa1 + (1 − λ)a2) ≤ λf (a1) + (1 − λ)f (a2): −1 It is strictly convex if equality implies a = a . 1 2 1 / 5 5.3: Convex Optimization Definition Let (X ; k · k) be a normed vector space. Then, a real functional f : X ! R achieves a local minimum value at x 0 2 X if: there is an > 0 such that, for all x 2 X satisfying kx − x 0k < , we have f (x) ≥ f (x 0). If this lower bound holds for all x 2 X , then the local minimum is also a global minimum value. Theorem Let (X ; k · k) be a normed vector space, A ⊆ X be a convex set, and f : X ! R be a convex functional on A. Then, any local minimum value of f on A is a global minimum value on A. If the functional is strictly convex on A and achieves a local minimum value on A, then there is a unique point x 0 2 A that achieves the global minimum value on A. Prove theorem in live session and discuss convexity of induced norm 2 / 5 5.3: Convex Optimization and Derivatives 1 Let (X ; k · k) be a normed vector space and f : X ! be a convex functional on a con- R −1 1 2 vex set A ⊆ X . −1 Theorem If f has a directional derivative at x 0 2 A in the direction x − x 0, then 0 f (x) ≥ f (x 0) + f (x 0)(x − x 0) for all x 2 A. If f is strictly convex then the inequality is strict for x 6= x 0. Corollary If f has directional derivatives in all directions at x 0 2 A and they all equal zero, then f (x 0) = min f (x): x2A If f is strictly convex, then x 0 is the unique minimizer over A. Prove corollary in live session 3 / 5 4.6: Projection onto Convex Sets v (v) v −PA The projection of vectors onto subspaces ∗ can be generalized to convex sets PA(v)=u ) For Hilbert space V and closed convex set v ( A ⊆ V , let P : V ! A denote the orthog- A A P onal projection of v 2 V onto A: − A u PA(v) , arg min ku − vk u u2A Theorem The orthogonal projection of v 2 V onto a closed convex set A ⊆ V exists and is unique. Theorem ∗ ∗ ∗ For any v 2= A, we have u = PA(v) iff hv − u j u − u i ≤ 0 for all u 2 A.
