Charles had previous 2012 Glenn Caruso, University of St. Thomas head coaching experience at the youth level with the Minneapolis Police Activities League and he 2011 Steve Johnson, Bethel University Brooklyn Center Youth Football League. 2010 Don Swanson (posthumously), Minneapolis Public Schools A native of Minneapolis, Charles was a 4-year 2009 Bob Nielson, University of MN Duluth starter and All-Conference tight end at Minneapolis Kalen DeBoer, University of Sioux Falls, SD North playing for Mike Favor and Rufus Bess. He 2008 Dave Dose, Retired Glencoe-Silver Lake HS also played basketball and played golf for the Polars. 2007 Wally Malmstrom, Mahtomedi High School Charles has an Associate of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Minneapolis 2006 Ron Stolski,Brainerd High School Community and Technical College. He has served as Minneapolis police officer since 2003. 2005 Jack Osberg, Augsburg College 2004 John Gagliardi, St. John’s University Before taking over the head coaching duties at North, Charles served as an assistant coach for four seasons, coaching the offensive line. 2003 Jim Mader, Albany High School Dave Nigon, Totino-Grace High School In his decade as the head football coach, Charles has been named the Section Grady Rostberg, Hutchinson High School Coach of the Year 6 times, winning 6 Section titles and 6 District championships. He’s 2002 Gary Engen, Mounds View High School led the Polars to Prep Bowl appearances in 2015, Lyle Anderson, Cook County High School 2016 and 2019. In 2016 Coach Adams was named 2001 George Thole, Stillwater High School; as the Minnesota Vikings High School Football Jim Simser, Fairmont High School Coach of the Year. He currently has 35 of his former 2000 Mark Dienhart, University of Minnesota players competing at the college level, including 1999 Jesse Ventura, Minnesota Governor; Tyler Johnson, the Gopher’s All-Time leading pass Gary Gustafson, North St. Paul High School; receiver. Buz Rumrill, Glencoe-Silver Lake High School Charles resides in Minneapolis and is married to 1998 Jim Dotseth, Mpls. Henry High School; Andreaua and they have three children, Adrian, Anyla Ron Gustafson, Grant Park High School; Terry McLean, Elk River High School and Audria. In his free time he enjoys fishing, grilling and running summer youth camps in Minneapolis. 1997 Joe Samuelson, Stillwater High School He is quick to point out the biggest influence in his 1996 Dave Skrien, University of Minnesota life – his father – Charles Adams II. 1995 Cal Stoll, University of Minnesota Charles’ efforts to give back to his alma mater and 1994 John Gagliardi, St. John’s University his community make him a very deserving recipient 1993 Murray Warmath, Minnesota Vikings of our Man of the Year Award. 1992 George Wemeier, University of Minnesota The MFCA salutes the 2020 Man of the Year – 1991 Tom Porter, St. Olaf College Charles Adams, III!! 1990 Bob Roy, Clinic Founder 1 Cal Stoll Award Larry Herm — Foley HS/Bethel University Larry was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He returned to the sub- urbs of Chicago as a teenager where he participated in football, wrestling and track at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School. He attended Winona State University and obtained two Bachelor of Science Degrees; one in Physical Education and the other in School and Community Health while earning varsity letters in both football and wrestling. Larry later earned a Master’s Degree in Physical Education at St. Cloud State University and became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He taught in Foley for 36 years, beginning in 1982. Larry retired in 2016 and is now working at Bethel University. Larry has been involved with football as a player or as a coach for over 50 years. He has coached every level of foot- ball from 7th grade to college football for the past 39 years. Larry compiled a record of 157-109 while acting as the head football coach at Foley for 27 years. His football team earned a State title in 1998 with a 21-7 victory over Jackson County Central and a Final Four appearance in 2000. He was honored to coach the 1999 Outstate Metro All-Star football game. Larry coached wrestling for 31 years with dual teams in the state tournament twenty times, and assisted with State Titles in 1989, 1993, and 1994. He coached track from 1982-1989 and returned as a Strength Coach from 2012-2016 and assisted with the State title team in 2013. Larry is now an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Bethel University where he also serves as an assistant football coach working with receivers. Larry has been married to Sue Herm for 38 years. She is a Professor of Nursing at St. Cloud State University. They have two married sons; Ryan and Joanna Herm live in Minnetonka. Eric and Blair Herm live in St. Louis Park. In 2017 Larry was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had the prostate removed and 3 months later it was deter- mined that he had stage 4 prostate cancer. After a series of events and the help of Dave Nelson along with Randy and Roseann Shaver, Larry connected with Dr. Rao of the University of Minnesota. Larry has been in remission for the past 14 months! 2 Ron Stolski Partnership Award Doubletree by Hilton — Park Place The Minnesota Football Coaches Association would like to recognize our partners in this clinic for most of the last two decades, the Doubletree – Park Place.
